Monday 5 th of June 2006 and we were moving with 3 - 4 knots in the TSS towards Suez. We had headwind force 7 - 8 and we had to reduce speed. Well, we were listening to Lustans Lakejer and I was thinking of when we were driving around in my friends Cadillac with Lustans Lakejer on full blast. I don't know if Lustans Lakejer is the right music for an 8m long Cadillac, but it's for sure better than Elvis.
We were making 50 km/h on the freeway in my brothers Cadillac with Elvis blasting high on the
Richter scale. Well, 50 km/h was a little too slow for me, I use to go between Helsingborg and Gothenburg (230 - 250 km) in 1 hour and 10 minutes and now we did Helsingborg - Båstad (60km) in 3 days flat.I remember when driving for these guys. We were cruising in a Chevrolet Impala cabriolet and I was driving through the town at 50km/h.

What the BIP ! I'm about to get parking fine here. They were sitting on top of the trunk drinking moonshine while
screaming at all the girls we passed. Needless to say I was busy keeping my head down in case we passed someone I knew.In Helsingborg there is a red light just before the freeway starts. I had it with all the “you’re to fast! Slow down!” so when the light turned green I floored the pedal and all the 8 cylinders fired in this waterbed (Driving a big American car is like driving a waterbed) and the car went off like a bullet from a gun. All the drinks and everything flew around and I was laughing.
They never
asked me to drive again.We were approaching No. 1 L/B when I came on my watch at lunch, the wind had decreased to a force 5. 24°C and the crew were freezing. But our Spanish Deckhand was on deck after lunch trying to get some sun.

I called Suez Port control 5 miles before No. 1 L/B and told them that we had an ETA 14:45 at No. 2 L/B. They could not hear me so they asked me to call them when I passed No. 1 L/B. Our Agent called me on the VHF and told me not to report to anyone or to answer any call on the VHF.
- Well, I didn't know that we were on a top secret mission.
Well, I had tried to call our Agent on VHF ch 19 several times before I gave up and called Suez Port Control on ch 14. Anyway, we tried ch 77 and it worked well and I called our Agent
before calling Suez Port Control again.I called them 3 NM before the No. 2 L/B and they told me to go to waiting anchorage #1 and wait for the pilot.
But when we approached the LB they called us and asked us to proceed in the channel to the anchorage.
- Pilot boat is waiting for you and will board in the channel.
We had the Pilot on board at 15:25 and at 15:45 we had anchored in anchorage 1C, just at the entrance to the Suez Canal. 17 seconds after dropping the anchor we had 2 floating souvenir shops tied to us. One on each side with the crew screaming offers over deck. It was water pipes, crystal and papyrus. Even the candelabra appeared, maybe the very same one our Motorman on Pegasus returned to them.
Our Motorman bought one candelabra when we arrived to Suez with Pegasus, lasted for 5 minutes. It broke down about the same time he returned to his cabin with the candelabra

While walking around the bridge the Southbound convoy came out from the Canal and it was nice to see all the ships coming. Our bunker barge arrived and all of the sudden deck was full of people. I gave up my walk, but not because of the people, my ankle looked like a foot ball and it was not comfortable to walk. A slight pain and I got some pain reliever roll on from our Spanish volunteer.
Our nurse onboard told me that I was not allowed to walk for another 3 days, well, I'm almost old enough to do what I want, and I want to walk.
Hmm, I was soon in the shower and there is a bathroom cabinet, you know the type. 2 doors with mirrors that opens towards you. I caught sight of myself in the right hand mirror.
- What!I'll be darned! The “FAT TO FLAT” had really been far quicker than I had expected it to be. Well, I heard for the 3rd time since coming onboard that I was, hmm, how did he (yes, it was a male again, where are all the blind females?) said it again?Oh yeah:
- You look sharp!- PLEASE!
Hmm, we lost track again, where were we?Yeah, I was really glad
when I saw that my stomach was a goner, but then I saw the rest of it in the left hand mirror and my day never became the same again.+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 6 th
of June 2006
and we were waiting for the pilot when I came on my watch at midnight. We have one man from the Agent onboard all the time during the transit and he got it confirmed that the pilot will board us around 02:30. We woke up Bosun and one extra Deckhand. We also
called Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer and Captain.Our Spanish volunteer wanted us to wake him up with tea and honey at 02:00. He wanted to drink tea with honey in his bed before he went out and started to heave up the anchor.
So I made some tea with honey for him, he even got to drink it from my private bucket, and as you can see, the bucket is almost as big as he is. He was happy and he appreciated it very much, but the Deckhand on my watch turned jealous.
- You never make tea and honey for me!
Not the effect I had been hoping for when I made the tea. Our pilot was onboard at 02:40 and we had the anchor up at 03:25.
Our girls came on watch at 04:00 and I had a few important questions to ask them.
Well, what do you know? The bridge was full of Deckhands, Pilots and I don't know all. But our Australian girl where drinking her morning tea when I told her:
- There are so many handsome boys on the bridge today, we can choose one each and bring to abuse in our cabins.

Our Spanish volunteer borrowed my camera to take a few pictures of the crew working in the cargo hold in the morning. They are making banners for our campaign in the Mediterranean. We are going to do a campaign against drifting nets. Greenpeace managed to get them banned and illegal, but they are still used. So we will have banners around the ship during the campaign.
What do you think of the following`?
The only big net we need is the net around the marine reserves.

Well, we were anchored in the Great Bitter Lake when I came on my watch at 12:00. I kept myself busy sorting out charts for Esperanza, they need charts for their trip to India, Philippines and beyond. And we're glad to get rid of some charts and tracings
The last north bound ship had entered the Great Bitter Lake and the South bound ship had left and our pilot came onboard around 15:05. We left the anchorage at 15:20 as second last ship. There was only one ship slower than us, an Egyptian military boat, and a landing craft. Our pilot told me that it was a very slow boat and that they could never make the passage in one day.
- Maybe they are on the way to Normandy to help the Americans to invade France, I said.
- Please, can't someone tell them that the World War II is over? I continued

Our Pilot was a nice guy and we had a good time, he said that the whole world was complaining about United States of America and he looked strange at me when I said:
- Not me! I don't hate USA.
We had an interesting discussion and the time turned quick, Chief Mate were soon on the bridge to relieve me.
I was off to our cargo hold to get the last charts for Esperanza and then I was of for my walk:
- DARN! I was on a 3 days’ rest.
Well, I walked slowly and I watched the scenery while walking. We passed different monuments and even a small beach in El Ismâ'ilîya. I felt some pain in my foot and at 18:15 I thought:- What the heck! I go for dinner.
I went for dinner, the first dinner for a few weeks by now. The crew was surprised to see me and the lasagne tasted good. I had a little agony for eating dinner, but its Tuesday and I need to indulge myself once and a while.
After dinner we went out on deck for a chat and at 8 o'clock I was down for my shower.While sitting on deck we passed El Qantara and I saw some really color full and beautiful trees along the Canal. We also passed a ferry in El Qantara. We had strong head wind during the transit and Rainbow Warrior was full of sand from the desert.

We left the pilot behind in Port Said at 21:45 and we were alone again, nice. Even if it was a nice pilot it’s better to be alone.
I relieved our Skipper at 23:00 so he could go to sleep. I'm up and about anyway, if I drink my diet drinks in my cabin or on the bridge is never mind. We listened to music and drank diet drinks and when we passed the last buoys we changed course towards NW and we left Port Said behind without any backward glances.
Well, Rainbow Warrior on the Mediterranean and we can as well split the month of June 2006 in to a third part before we blow it out of proportions.
