of July 2025
and my Driver is waiting for me in the reception when I am ready with the breakfast. It is raining, heavy rain but we hope to get a little bit of sun when we come north.
We decided to go north of Conakry to see if we can find some green area for bird watching. We drive through a village and I can report some Feral Pigeons sitting on a wire. We end up in a palm oil plantation following a dirt track through the plantation. we see on Senegal Coucal sitting on a wire above the track road.

We drive towards south and the dirt track ends at a house and my driver get out to ask for an area were we can look for birds. We turn around and follow the track back, and we continue towards north until the dirt track comes to an end.
Beautiful area, but only two birds seen when they were flying by. But I could hear that there was a lot of birds and I managed to make 4 recordings.

We turned around and we started to drive back, not seeing any birds, but we could hear many birds. we heard one bird that I ID as one Double-spurred Spurfowl. I tried to record the bird yesterday, no success, but this bird sounded the same.

Driving through the village going back to the road to Conakry and I spotted two Olive-naped Weavers and that is “LIFER” #1616 for me.
We found our way back to the main road and we headed south towards the university area where we had been yesterday. I do not know why I was so tired, but I dozed
off in the back seat.
First stop, and only one kingfisher and two bee-eaters, no water in the pond even though we had have heavy rain. So, we continued towards the wetland and we stopped at the wall, many Village Weavers. And I spotted one Pin-tailed Whydah, too far away for any pictures, but good enough to use for ID.

We spot a couple of Reed Cormorants and my driver spotted a group of Red-headed Quelea in the reeds, of course, it took quite some time before I could spot the birds. I got a picture and this is “LIFER” #1620.
One Common Kestrel landed in the field and I managed to get two pictures before the kestrel was flushed by one of the Spur-winged Lapwings.
One Little Bittern caught a fish, but it disappeared behind the grass before I could get a picture.

Today, even though we had had heavy rain, the dirt tracks were almost dry (but muddy). So, we decided to try to get out on the dirt track in to the rice fields, we had to turn around after 100m. This is obviously an area to visit during the dry season.
We decided to call it a day to get back to the hotel. We will stop at a vape shop to buy some Voopoo coils on the way. Another good day with 5 “LIFERS”
1) Oriole Warbler
2) Green-backed Camaroptera
3) White-spotted Flufftail
4) Olive-naped Weaver
5) Red-headed Quelea
We called the shop and they confirmed that they had Voopoo coils and we took off towards the shop. The shop is close to the Airport and it is on the way to NOOM Hotel Conakry.
We had to call Guinéenne De L'e-cigarette again when we arrived. The shop was located on a yard at an apartment building surrounded by a wall.
They had to come out and open the gate so we could get inside. A very strange location, for sure not a place for DROP IN

Conakry's biggest mosque
We leave the shop, one more stop, to buy some fresh bread and milk before going back to the hotel. We pass Conakry's biggest mosque on the way to the supermarket and I took a picture. My driver was a wee bit nervous as there were police and military in the area.
