Monday 11thof November 2019and I had breakfast in the restaurant and I left Radisson Blu with the same driver that drove me to Debre Libanos. We drove north yesterday and today I will go south to the Bishoftu, new name of Debre Zeit
Bishoftu
(Oromo: Bishooftu, Amharic: ቢሾፍቱ) is a town and separate woreda of Ethiopia, lying south east of Addis Ababa. It was formerly known as Debre Zeyit (Amharic: ደብረ ዘይት) however since the late 1990s it has been officially known by the Oromo name, Bishoftu, which was its name until 1955.
The town is located in the East Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region, and has an elevation of 1,920 metres.
Bishoftu is located 47.9 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa along its route 4 highway.
We drive through the city and we drive past the lodge where I had lived the first night. We passed the lodge and passed the railway and a wee bit further up the dust road and I am at the site where we had spotted the Quailfinch. We parked on the dust road and I went out to check for birds. I walked around the edge of the wetland.
I didn´t see any new birds, seen them all before. The Glossy Ibis, a very beautiful bird, but they were too far away for any pictures. We left after 15 minutes.

We left the wetlands and we went to look for the field with the Cranes. We had seen Cranes when we drove to Addis Ababa on the last day on the Classical Endemic Birding Tour Ethiopia with Flamingos Tours Ethiopia. We located the highway and the railway. We had seen the Cranes from the highway and the field had been between the highway and the railway.
We drove around Lake Bishoftu Buda Lake and when we were on the north side we drove towards east until we reached the railway. There was a small tunnel and we followed the dust road and we were spotting the highway in a jiff on the other side of the tunnel. After about 200 meters from the tunnel and we stopped. I had seen the Common Cranes on the field.
At Lake Hornborga in Sweden I could walk almost all the way up to the birds. But here they were very scared and they took of as soon as I had crossed the road.
We stop after having passed through the tunnel

We crossed the bridge over the highway but there was no excitements to be seen and we turned around and drove back to the rail way. We discovered plenty birds of prey flying around and I went out to try to get pictures.
The birds was not scared, someone had been throwing offal and the birds was busy eating. Tawny Eagles, Hooded Vultures and the Yellow-billed Kites. There were also many Pied Crows.
Thanks to Birdforum for all the help when I have been confused with the different eagles and Kites. To see the difference between the Steppe and the Tawny is not very easy for a beginner like me.
Well, amazing with all the birds feeding on the offal. I was back in the car and we drove for 20 meters when we stopped. A very beautiful Tawny Eagle was sitting next to the road, just a few meters away and I got a few pictures before we continued.
I was very happy with the last stop, started badly with the cranes at a far distance. But all the birds of prey at the offal saved the bird watching session.

We left the tunnel under the railway behind and we drove towards the south end of Lake Cheleleka, the same place where I had my first bird watching in Ethiopia. I was just going to check out the area before returning to Radisson Blu in Addis Ababa. There was not so many birds today and I left after about 15 minutes. Time to get back to Addis.
But I managed to see a new bird, looked like a Eurasian Coot. So it must be a Red-knobbed Coot. And it was, could not see it until I was back at my room in Addis. Then the red knobs was clearly visible on the picture. There was also Glossy Ibis and Cattle Egrets.

Back in Addis Ababa and I spent the rest of the day at Radisson Blu. Dinner in the restaurant, something I regretted, would have been way better with salmon in my room. Well, tomorrow my last day and I will got to Sheraton Addis Ababa and try my luck with the Tacazze Sunbird. And I will make sure my batteries in the camera are fully charged.
