Well, the flag of Skåne, just a BONUS flag.
Sunday 17thof September 2017and my cold wa snot much better. My nose was running like there was no tomorrow. OK, I have seen the Orangutan, yes, I'm here for the birds. But if you go to Borneo it is also to see the Orangutan. So I have been lucky and if I lose this day to the cold, it is bad, but not catastrophic.
We started by popping down the main road looking for Hornbills. We want to see the Rhinoceros hornbill and there is a good chance to see it on the main road between the rainforest and the palm oil plantation. But we were soon giving up, it was a very quiet morning. We only saw the Pacific Swallow that there are millions of. No other birds and we drove back to the CORE AREA.
We saw an Eagle in a top of a tree far away when we drove back. We passed the creek, driving over the concrete over the creek and we spotted a Common Sandpiper. We turned left towards the Rhino food planation and the Kingfisher hide when we had passed the creek. We could hear the beautiful Black-and-red broadbill.
They sound like Donal Duck and it is easy to hear them. They came out to show themselves, but not long enough for any good pictures. We passed the Rhino food plantation and the Kingfisher hide. We could hear Woodpeckers and we stopped the car. We saw the Maroon Woodpecker and the Olive-backed Woodpecker.
The pictures of the Maroon Woodpecker went straight to the garbage. The Olive-backed Woodpecker can be used if I keep the pictures small.
A very slow morning, at least regarding photos. We spotted another Black-and-Yellow Broadbill. No pictures, and Fantails, no pictures. 2 Woodpeckers and 2 animals looking like Minks. Plenty monkeys. I went to look for birds around Tabin Wildlife resort when I was back at 11. But I was soon off to bed as my cold was kicking in.
We spotted a Little Spiderhunter outside the coffee shop before we took off for the afternoon drive. And just to show you how lucky I was I will put the picture of the beautiful Spiderhunter here. We see the body on the left hand side and the long typical Spiderhunter bill on the right hand side. The head is behind a branch.

Afternoon drive and we decided to pop down the main road again to look for the Rhinoceros hornbill. No luck, we saw a Black eagle flying by but that was it. We turned around and drove back to the core area again. We stopped at the creek and we spotted a Little Egret and the Common Sandpiper again.

we continued towards the end of the dirt road, passing the area where we had seen the orangutans yesterday. We spotted a raptor sitting in a tree next to the road. A grey bird and it
Morph
noun
Biology each of several variant forms of an animal or plant.
looked like a Changeable Hawk-Eagle. But it was grey in colour, something I had never seen before.
We investigated and it could be a Changeable Hawk-Eagle DARK MORPH. I checked the internet and I only found one site explaining it,www.malaysianbirds.comI quote:
The Changeable Hawk-Eagle has better known sub-species, the Crested Hawk Eagle which populate India and Ceylon.
The unique point about this birds is that the bird is dimorphic, a bird that could developed as 2 different coloured birds. The dark morph is chocolate-brown all over, tail base might appear lighter, then a light coloured white morph. The bird has evolved through a complicated phylogeny that makes exact ID difficult. Both sexes are identical though the female may be marginally larger. We are having the crestless sub-species though a tiny "crest" is visible at times.
We stopped at the tree where we had seen the orangutan, no sign of the orangutan, but we spotted a White-chested babbler. The picture was nothing good, so yet another disappointment. My last birding drive came to an end. We will walk around the resort tomorrow morning to see if we can find any Spiderhunters and Sunbirds.
My cold wasn't getting any better so we will see how it goes with the “walking” tomorrow. Just clickHEREto find out if we find anything around the resort.
