Friday 12 th
of February 2021
and I met my Guide from Bird Safari Sweden at the Supermarket at Salbohed at 06 thirty. From there it was 5 minutes to drive to the hide in the forest. Took us about 15 minutes to walk to the hide from the parking.
We walked to the barn where Bird Safari Sweden have built a bird hide. We fired up the gas heater and my Guide prepared the food for the birds. I was soon alone and I had to wait for an hour for the daylight.
I spotted a couple of big raptors and it turned out to be two White-tailed Eagles.

White-tailed Eagle / Havsörn. I took this picture for ID purpose only
The eagles was too far away and high up in the trees so no good pictures, just one for ID purpose. Same with the Common Buzzard couple sitting eve further away in the trees on my left hand side.
The Buzzard was soon joined by a partner and these two birds spend hours together on the same branch for a couple of hours.

The Eagles left around 14:30 and BOOM, one of the Common Buzzards came over to land in one of the trees. So they have spent the whole day watching the Eagles and as long as the Eagles was in the area they stayed away.
The bird was sitting behind twigs so I could not get any good pictures. The Buzzard was sitting in the tree for 5 minutes before it disappeared and I left the hide to walk back to the car.

We will go to have another try with the Northern Hawk-owl and we will stop at one of Bird Safari Sweden's feeding place. During the winter Bird Safari Sweden have a couple of feeding places to help the birds during the winter time. And we will have a look for Bullfinches.
It is a 5 minutes’ drive from the Buzzard hide to the feeding area. And we spot two Bullfinches, one beautiful red male and one female.

We left for the forest to look for the Northern Hawk-owl. We park the car and we walk along the snow covered dirt road. Suddenly I see the owl flying across the road landing in the top of a tree next to the road. Very lucky that the bird landed kind of close to the road.
Well, the tree was next to the dirt road, but the owl was in top of the tree so it was kind of far away. But I tried to get some pictures.

I was happy to have seen the owl. It was very cold and I decided to drive back to my cottage at Fallängetorp för folk och fä. My Guide stayed behind to try to get more pictures. But as it is very cold I decided to leave, and it was also getting dark.
Upcoming weekend and I will go birding by myself and I will be back at the Rough-legged Buzzard Hide on Monday to give the Rough-legged Buzzard another try.
