Bird watching on Faroe Islands

Thursday 12 th of May 2022 and I drive to Kirkjubøur to have a look for the King Eider and the Brent Gooses. And I leave quite late, the weather is terrible. I started my eBird app at 09:58. The weather was OK by the time I reached Kirkjubøur

The Wren was singing like there was no tomorrow but I failed to ge any recording. I spotted the Brent Gooses again but I could not drive out on the fields as a car was parked on the road blocking the access. They were doing some construction work in the area.

I will go to The Nix and I will stop at the eBird hotspot: Velbastadhalsen--ponds by the road on the way. And I was quite surprised that I found kind of many different birds there.

It was gloom and grey for long as I could see and there was no birds at The Nix expect from the gulls so I drove back to Torshavn. I will have a rest before going to have dinner at my friend's house at 6 o'clock.

I drive to my friend and he is almost ready with all the food by the time I arrive. He and his wife had made just about everything they eat on Faroe Island. Fermented lamb and fermented whale.

Dried whale and whale looking like wood. There was also whale BLUBBER and I tried everything. And we had to send a video to our friend in Bangkok so he knew exactly what we were eating and what we were up to.

I will leave tomorrow and we talked about the tunnels on Faroe Islands. I have been through all of them, except the newest tunnel, the Eysturoyartunnilin. Famous for the roundabout under the Atlantic Ocean. We decide to go to have a drive through the tunnel when we are finished with the food from Faroe Islands.

I was very happy, now I have tried all the food from Faroe islands, and the best, well, the BBQ lamb we had when I arrived was the best. But the fermented lamb and whale was interesting.

Roundabout

A roundabout (traffic circle) is a type of circular intersection or junction in which road traffic is permitted to flow in one direction around a central island, and priority is typically given to traffic already in the junction.

Eysturoyartunnilin

The Eysturoyartunnilin (in English the Eysturoy Tunnel, earlier known as the Skálafjarðartunnilin) is a large undersea road tunnel under the Tangafjørður sound in the Faroe Islands, connecting the island of Streymoy to the island of Eysturoy.

It also crosses the southern part of Skálafjørður, and connects the towns of Runavík on the eastern side and Strendur on the western side of the fjord, and includes the world's first undersea roundabout in the middle of the network.

It is the largest ever infrastructure project in the Faroe Islands. Altogether, the three-branch sub-sea tunnel measures 11.24 km long, including the roundabout. Construction costs are estimated to be around a billion DKK.

The roundabout features artwork, including large sculptures and light effects. The tunnel opened for traffic on 19 December 2020.

The entrance to the tunnel is about 10 minutes away with car from my friend’s house. We enter the tunnel and we reach the roundabout and we take a few rounds to get a video. Then we leave the tunnel to exit the tunnel at Runavík. We make a U-turn and go back in to the tunnel.

We reach the roundabout and we take off towards Strendur. Same procedures in Strendur, a U-turn and back in to the tunnel. Now we have covered the whole length of the tunnel.

We are back at the roundabout and we take a few “BONUS” rounds to get a few pictures and we are lucky as there is no cars. So, we are alone going round and round to get a few pictures. And when we left the roundabout going back to Torshavn we had seen it all.

The roundabout is kind of famous as it have appeared in a few commercials and now I had been through all the tunnels on Faroe Islands.

I think we counted to 12 rounds around the art work in the round about before we left. We had had some fun and, well, now I have seen it. We call our friend and we drive there to have some tea. There will also be an opportunity to have a group photo of Roy Mærsk dream team.

We have tea and time turned really quick so it will be yet another very late night for me here on Faroe Islands, but it is the last night. And one thing is for sure, if it had not been for my friends from Roy Mærsk my visit to Faroe Islands would not have been so fun.

I have enjoyed my visit very much and now I have visited all the Nordic Countries.

I drop my friend at his house before I drive back to my apartment. It was very late by the time I was back home and I went straight to bed. I will have to go to the airport at 13:00 tomorrow to return my car and to check in. But I will go to look for the King Eider at Kirkjubøur.

I will pick up my friend and his wife on the way and you just need to click HERE to find out if we have any luck with the King Eider.
