Taal Volcano

Sunday 29 th of November 2015 and I woke up about 30 minutes before my wake up call. I felt much better today so I was looking forward to get to the Taal volcano. My car is booked for 10Burger Machineo'clock but I called the driver and changed it to 11. One hour extra to get better.

I had the breakfast, 2 omelettes and some toast with tea. It was OK, but not much more than OK. The driver was outside the hotel when I came down at 11 o'clock and we were soon on our way to Taal Lake and the Taal Volcano.

Hopping in to the car and I could see the Burger Machine, I remember the place from when I stayed at Best Western Hotel La Corona in Manila 20 years ago. I have seen the Burger Machines around Manila several times, not a place I would eat at. Not even dead drunk.Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

Taal Lake

is a freshwater lake in the province of Batangas, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The lake fills Taal Caldera, a large volcanic caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. It is the country's third largest lake after Laguna de Bay and Lake Lanao.

Volcano Island, the location of Taal Volcano's historical eruptions and responsible for the lake's sulfuric content, lies near the center of the lake. There is a crater lake on Volcano Island. Known as the Yellow Lake or the Main Crater Lake, it contains its own small island, Vulcan Point. Vulcan Point was thought to be the largest third order lake in the world but Treasure Island (Ontario) is much bigger and is thought to be the world largest, and is also on a freshwater lake.

TOURISM
Regular tours of the lake are available to tourists. After crossing the lake, visitors travel to the top of Volcano Island on horseback. During their trip up and down the mountain, visitors are treated to a stunning view of the lake and its surroundings.

In mid-2007, controversy ensued when the Korean firm Jung Ang Interventure was given clearance to build a health spa on Volcano Island itself along the lake's edge. Over the course of the next few weeks, several government officials expressed their disapproval of the construction project.

On June 28, the DENR suspended the Korean firm's environmental clearance certificate, rendering them incapable of pursuing further construction on the island until they secure other necessary permits. Because of the unpopular public reaction to the project, the Korean company's permit was permanently revoked by the DENR in early July 2007.

We were soon on the high way and we were hauling arse until it was time to get off the high way. Suddenly the traffic came to a full stop going to Tagaytay and Taal Lake. I asked the driver whatManila High waywas going on.
- It is a long weekend
- What??!!
- Holiday tomorrow and every one goes back home to the provinces.
- Hmm, excuse me! Shouldn't the traffic have been on Friday afternoon?

Anyway, the roads going back to Manila was empty. I had expected to be at Taal Lake in 1 hour or so but it was almost 4Manila day touro'clock in the afternoon when we parked at Leynes Resort on the beach at Taal Lake.

Manila day tour

I was asleep in the back seat by the time we reached Tagaytay and when I woke up I could see the Taal Lake and we were pretty high up above the lake.

We had to drive down to the lake on a very small road along the mountain. The road was lined with warning signs about landslides and it was ZIG ZAGGING its way up and down the side of the mountain. There wasn't any real good place to stop for pictures of the Taal Lake and volcano on the road.

We got out of the car and we could see the Taal Volcano in the middle of the lake. We could also see one dead volcano sticking out as a cape from the volcano.

Taal Volcano

is a complex volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It is the second most active volcano in the Philippines with 33 historical eruptions. All of these eruptions are concentrated on Volcano Island, an island near the middle of Taal Lake. The lake partially fills Taal Caldera, which was formed by prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 and 5,380 BP. Viewed from Tagaytay Ridge, Taal Volcano and Lake presents one of the most picturesque and attractive views in the Philippines. It is located about 50 km south of the capital of the country, the city of Manila.

The volcano had several violent eruptions in the past causing loss of life in the island and the populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at around 5,000 to 6,000. Because of its proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters. All volcanoes of the Philippines are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

In the upper right corner you can see the small dead volcano we went to with the boat.

Leaving for our volcano adventure

It would take two hours or so to go see the volcano lake, at least 2 hours as it required trekking.Taal Lake and Taal VolcanoSo I choose a 30 minutes tour with the boat. That would take us to the Volcano Island and back.

I was soon soaking wet, they are using a design of the boat, maybe 3000 year old design, and obviously without any improvements for 3000 years so the water was splashing over us non-stop.

We reached the volcano island and we drove along the coast for a few minutes before turning back to where we had started from. We cameTaal Lake and Taal Volcanoclose to the dead volcano on the NW corner and we turned towards East.

There were surprisingly many houses on the island, I guess restaurants for the tourists.

No cars allowed but you can do horse riding on the volcano island.

We steered back towards Leynes Resort and I was happy. I had been on the Taal Lake and I had seen the Taal Volcano and no need to come back here again. Now I'm getting hungry and I have planned to have dinner at Tempura at Robinsons back in Manila.

I was hungry already when we set off with the boat but they didn't had any snickers at Leynes Resort so a bottle of water had to do. Did nothing for my hunger but made wonders for my diet!

Time to go back to Manila

There was a good smell from BBQ when we came back to the beach at Leynes Resort and I was reminded about my hunger. But it would take them 30 minutes to get the BBQ ready and weTaal Lake and Taal Volcanodecided to return to Manila. We drove up the mountain towards Tagaytay again.

We made a stop for a few pictures, but the view wasn't really any good. We were soon on our way again and it didn't take long before I was suffering from motion sickness. Zig Zagging, up and down and I got a head ache. It was so nice to get up to Tagaytay on top of the mountain ridge. I'll be darned, the traffic was at a full stop going to Manila. And the lane coming from Manila was now empty.

The road was so full so we decided to make a U-turn and try another way. We ended up in the middle of nowhere and it took us quite some time to find the express way back to Manila. But we were alone on the road so it was OK.

It was very nice to be back in Manila, it was around 6 o'clock in the evening. I will have to wake up early tomorrow morning for my trip to Donsol. So in order to save time I asked the driver to dropTempura Japanese Restaurant in Manilame off at Robinsons so I could have my dinner at Tempura.

Dinner at Tempura was one of the things I had been looking forward to with the visit to Manila. So I was very disappointed when I discovered that they had closed Tempura at Robinsons.
Christmas at Robinson Manila
Well, where to go now? I went up on the third floor and when I came back down on the second floor I found a Spaghetti House and I went in to take a seat.

It was good, but not as good as it would have been at Tempura.

I walked around Robinson for a few minutes and it was impossible to miss that the Christmas had come to town. The Christmas commerce was in full swing at Robinsons. I walkedBurger Machine in Manilaback to my hotel and it took me around 5 minutes.

I spoke with the travel desk and the car to Donsol would cost 15000 Peso. It was between 500 to 550 km and they told me it would take 14 hours.Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- 14 Hours!

I thought it would take 6 to 7 hours, in Sweden I would have done it in 3 hours. Anyway, I changed plan, leaving at 8 o'clock instead of 10. So I asked for a wake-up call at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning and I went to bed. Well, this was not what I had expected. Well, we will see tomorrow and you just need to click HERE to find yourself on the Pan Philippine Highway to Donsol.
