OK, it has come to my knowledge that we have senior citizens visiting my web page. How hard can it be? So it's not very easy for them to see the blue coloured links to the next page.

Birding/ Bird watching in Suan Rot Fai/ Queen Sirikit Park in Bangkok, Thailand

Tuesday 2 ^nd of April 2019 and I woke up at 04:00. Of course, my alarm is set to go off at 4. I out on the kettle and I was drinking Earl Grey tea reading the latest online drivel. I left at 6 thirty and I stepped out of the taxi and I started my bird watching at 06:58 according to my eBird mobile app.

My Guide from UAEBIRDING.COM was the one who made me join eBird and today is the first time I will use it “LIVE” And at first it was a little annoying, report birds at the same time as I had to take pictures and trying to make sound recordings.

I cross the bridge and the first bird I see in Suan Rot Fai is the Scally-breasted Munia . Well, of course, there was a lot of crows, pigeons and Common Mynas. But the Munia was the first picture I took and also the first bird I reported in the eBird mobile app. Second bird was the Zebra Dove

I was taking pictures I would not normally have taken just to have something for my eBird checklist. It was still not full day light so I had to use an crazy ISO speed. Oriental Magpie Robins , I started to fill up my eBird record, but after 14 birds I stopped, they were everywhere. And most of them looked to be collecting material to build nests.

I walked down to the Kingfisher pond and I spotted one Cattle Egret coming to breeding plumage. I also discovered that they had removed the bushes along the “Kingfisher Pond” so it was not possible to sneak up on the Kingfishers.

So the bushes are removed at the pond so it was not possible to sneak down to the water hidden from any possible birds. I spotted 3 Chinese Pond heron and one Malaysian Pied Fantail . I almost missed the Asian Openbill on the other side of the pond. I had the light against me so the bird was hard to see.

And all the garbage laying around in the park, it is a disgrace. Stupid people, really, don´t understand anything. And if it looks like this in a PARK, then we can imagine how the rest of the country look. Yes, I have been a around and it looks like a garbage dump.

And this is the people, now imagine what´s coming out from the back of the factories.

I left the “Kingfisher pond” and I was very disappointed. They had removed the bushes and left the garbage, disappointed but not surprised. Walking back towards the bike track along the moat and I stopped to buy a bottle of water. Not much birds along the bike track and I was soon across the new bike bridge they built destroying the “Kingfisher Area”

I turned right and I was walking down towards the “owl area” and I passed yet another group of Scaly-breasted Munias. No sign of the Scops Owl but I could see the Spotted Owlet at the “Traffic School” Sitting high up in the tree so it was to think about to take any pictures.

I tried my Audubon Bird Caller when I had passed the owlet. The bird didn´t came as close as last time. But the bird landed a few meters above me. Sun against me, but the Spotted Owlet / นกเค้าจุด was sitting there looking at me so I gave it a try with the camera.

So I guess this s the second time I have attracted an owl with my “caller” I walked back to the bridge crossing the moat to Queen Sirikit Park. I want to go check out some Javan Finches.

I met a birder at the “owl area” and he told me that he had seen some Finches he didn´t know what it was. He showed me the pictures but I know duck all about finches. And I was lucky and I could impress the guy. It looked to be Javan Finches and the only reason I know them is the birds from Fiji. No one knew where they came from on Fiji.

And here they are most likely escaped from the Chatuchak Market. He told me where he had seen them and I went to have a look. I spotted a few Black-collared and Asian Pied Starlings on the way back to the bridge to Queen Sirikit. A Spotted Dove got caught with my camera, but otherwise nothing.

There were Pied Myna or Asian Pied Starling / นกอีแจว and of course, many Eurasian Tree Sparrows feeding in the park, but nothing exciting was seen.

I had no luck finding the Java Finch in Queen Sirikit, a few herons but not close enough for any good pictures. I met the bird watcher that had seen the Finches and we were talking.

He showed me a board walk through the bushes and he told me that he had been seeing a Slaty-legged crake a couple of time. He also told me that there had been a Blue-winged Pita sighted in this very area.

We exchanged some interesting information and both of us was on the way back home. It was getting hot and we had been walking around for 3 hours. I decided to go have one more try with the Java Finch before going back home. And I ran in to a lizard shewing on something on the way, and it looked like this lizard had problem to eat what looked like a doggy shew.

No luck with the Java Finch and I went towards one of the gates to get a taxi back home. I will be back to check out the board walk and to look for the Java Finch.

Last pictures for today was the Eurasian Tree Sparrows looking for food on the parking lot. I was lucky and I got a taxi within seconds after walking out of the gate.
