Birding/ Bird watching in Suan Rot Fai/ Queen Sirikit Park in Bangkok, Thailand

Thursday 6 th of June 2019 and I was going back to check out on the Stork-billed Kingfisher in Suan Rot Fai. And there was a few drops of rain when I had walked 50 meters from my apartment. I found a taxi and it started to pour down after 5 minutes. Turn around?

I decided to take the chance and it was pouring down so you could not see outside the taxi. But I was lucky, the rain stopped when we approached Suan Rot Fai.

Today´s track in Suan Rot Fai

I was happy when I got out of the taxi, no rain, but it was no good light for photography. I saw a heron flying down towards the Kingfisher Pond and I walked to the pond on my way to the Stork-billed Kingfisher area.

Two Asian Openbills were sitting in the top of the trees. Before they cut the area around the ponds there was always a lot of Asian Openbills sitting in the trees together with Egrets and Herons. Of course, this time of the year and the Egrets and Herons are busy taking care of their young ones. It was nice to see the Openbills again.

Walking towards the Stork-billed Kingfisher nest leaving the Kingfisher Pond behind, maybe time to call it something else as I have not seen any kingfishers there for a very long time. Maybe call it “The pond with no birds”, anyway, I spotted some Indian Rollers and this is a very scared bird so no pictures, but I managed to make a sound recording

Remarks from the Recordist

Recorded with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder, High Pass Filter applied with Audacity

Approaching the bird and I gave the internationally recognized sign for “PLEASE! Be quiet while I record the bird” to two female park worker sitting between me and the Indian Roller.

Some talking and park cars cut out of the recording. We can hear the thunder at the end of the recording

I see a few fantails and Waterhens down at the Stork-billed area. And two more Asian Openbills sitting in the trees. 4 Openbills in one day, have not seen so many Openbills in Suan Rot Fai for a very long time and it was nice to see them again.

I saw the Stork-billed flying away when I came and I put down the observation in my eBird map. I discovered the bird again and I sneaked up on the bird trying to get some pictures. The Stork-billed had a fish in the bill and it was for the babies in the nest.

Continuing to the Asian Barred Owlet tree and I spotted the Javan Pond Herons again. And one Indian Roller sitting in a tree and the bird didn´t mind me coming up very close.

No sign of any owls today and I started to walk back towards the Stork-billed when I had got some pictures of the Indian Roller.

Walking back and there was a huge monitor lizard crossing the walk path. Disappeared down one of the small ponds. I spotted the Stork-billed outside the nest, but my darn camera could not focus on the bird. A 3000 US Dollar camera and it cannot focus on a bird. I was swearing over Canon.

The bird was just sitting there and I could not take any pictures, duck!
