Introduction

All National Parks are closed because of the Wuhan Virus. Malls and markets are open so, well, maybe there is a point of having the national parks closed. Anyway, we decided to go to check out some of the eBird hotspots in the Khao Yai area. It is not like the birds stay within the National Park limits.

I was hoping to see a Hornbill or two. My friend spotted two hornbills but I missed them.

We have planned to visit three eBird hotspots today:

1) Khao Yai NP--North gate & Chao Por Khao Yai Shrine vicinity

2) Khao Yai Nature Life & Tours Resort

3) Lam Takhong Dam--Ta Ngoi scrub & farmlands

Land transportation

Birding/ Bird watching at Khao Yai, Thailand

North entrance about 180 km from DOWN TOWN Bangkok

You will need a car and if you don't have your own a taxi is a very convenient way of travelling. Depending on the early morning traffic it will take about two and a half hours reach the area. You rent the taxi for a full day and it will set you back with about 2000-3000 Baht depending on distances etc. (May 2020). To make sure that the driver understand you can show the below Thai Script:

There is public transport and many options to get to Khao Yai. Have a look at the “ Get there & Stay ” Thai National Parks web page section. But remember that it is not allowed to enter the park by foot. And the distances between the different points of interest require a car.

Many hotels offer pick up service in Bangkok.

There is a whole lot of hotels in the area. And many hotels offer car and guide service. Just look on internet and Thailand NAtional Parks have excellent information - They have listed some of the popular places at the “ Get there & Stay ” section.

Weather / climate

Weather, Thailand is darn hot! But coming up the mountains in Khao Yai and you will need some warm clothing during the winter. It can be freezing cold in the morning and I talk from experience.

Below charts covering Prachin Buri, Khao Yai extends in to the province Prachin Buri and this is the closest area at the web site http://www.climatemps.com But remember the cold mornings during the winter.

Khao Yai National Park has three main seasons, with an annual mean temperature of 23° Celsius, though this varies greatly with the seasons.

• Rainy season (May–October): Most days have high rates of precipitation. The atmosphere is humid with average temperatures of 27 °C during the day dropping to 13 °C at night. Streams at peak flow.

• Cool season (November–February): Clear skies, sunny and cool. Average temperatures of 22 °C during the day and 10 °C at night. Good time for hiking.

• Hot season (March–April): Humid with daytime temperatures of 20–30 °C and 17 °C at night.

So I have found that if I use both the web pages for information, well, nothing else needed.

PBase/Peter Ericson - Peter Ericson, a guy I thought was from USA because of his family name. I met him at Lat Krabang Paddies in May 2020 and turned out that he was Swedish. Anyway, I have used his excellent page PBase since 2016 as help to ID birds by the help from his beautiful bird pictures.

Bangkok City Birding - A lot of interesting birding stories and information on this bird watching blog by David Gandy. Bangkok-based patch-worker in Suan Rot Fai, a large park close to the city's famous weekend market. He have recorded 150 species on his patch since 2008. As one of the only big green spaces in the city, “SRF” acts as a real magnet for migrants during spring and autumn, and holds a healthy selection of "sibes" during the winter months.

Fatbirder is a fantastic web page with information from, I think every country in the world. My first stop when I plan for my bird watching trips. There is information about locations and guides, well, pretty much everything you need to know. Sometimes this is the only place I need to visit to plan my trip.

I bought this book for bird watching in Thailand, but it goes for all over SE Asia

I have been very happy with the “A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand and South East Asia by Craig Robson” But I had a fire in my condo 2019 and I needed to buy a new book. I was looking for the “A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand and South East Asia by Craig Robson” as I liked the book. But this book is not available anymore so I had to buy the “A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand” by Craig Robson.

What a disappointment this was, using the pictures in the book didn't helped to ID any birds.

I bought the book as soon as the book stores opened after the Wuhan virus. And I am very happy with the book and I have managed to ID some birds using the book.

This new field guide will help you identify all 1049 species to have been recorded in the country to date, including the 20 species endemic or near-endemic to Thailand.

-Taxonomy follows the HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World.

-Detailed texts covering status, habitat and behaviour, age, sex and geographical variation, voice, and confusion species.

-Almost 2200 illustrations covering all species and distinctive subspecies, birds in flight, males and females, juveniles and non-breeding plumages, where appropriate.

Places to visit

Khao Yai

Many eBird hotspots around Khao Yai

Established in 1962 as Thailand's first national park, it is the third largest national park in Thailand. Situated mainly in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Khao Yai extends into Prachinburi, Saraburi and Nakhon Nayok provinces. The main checkpoint of the park is 180 km from Bangkok.

The park covers an area of 2,168 km², including rain/evergreen forests and grasslands. 1,351 meters high Khao Rom is the highest mountain within the park. The average altitude of the national park ranges from 400 to 1,000 meters.

Khao Yai is part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex; a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO, covering 5 protected areas from Khao Yai to Cambodian border. The other protected areas are; Pang Sida National Park, Thap Lan National Park, Ta Phraya National Park and Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary.

The rainy season is May to October with high humidity and with the most rainfall in september. The rest of the year is quite dry. November to February are the winter months with cooler weather and average temperatures of 22 °C during the day and down to 9-10 °C during the night.

There are many eBird hotspots in the National Park and around the National Park. 416 species have been reported in Khao Yai so there is a lot of birds. And you can see Hornbills in the area. Avibase check list for Khao Yai have 4 different Hornbills:
• Great Hornbill
• Brown Hornbill
• Oriental Pied-Hornbill
• Wreathed Hornbill

And while looking for birds there are chances to see elephants. There are also many gibbons in the trees. Deer, you will grow tired of them as they come all the way up to you in the restaurant to beg for food. But you have a great chance to see Gibbons climbing around in the top of the trees.

There are many trails in the park and 14km from the northern entrance there is a visitor centre. There is a river and a restaurant plus several food stalls.

Lam Takhong Dam--Ta Ngoi scrub & farmlands

Lam Takhong Dam--Ta Ngoi scrub & farmlands is an eBird hotspot: about 40 km from the northern entrance to the Khao Yai National Park. My eBird track shows that I have been driving on water. But if you come during the dry season the water levels are very low and you can drive on dirt tracks.

You can see mussels on the remains of the trees sticking up from the ground while driving around. And it is a beautiful area to drive around on with streams lined with birds looking for food in the mud and water.

Driving along the dirt tracks and streams in the dry part of Lam Takhong Dam was a beautiful experience. I could see mussels (now dead) on the remains of the dead trees.

And there was a lot of birds. Cattle Egret, never reported before but as the dry parts of the Lam Takhong Dam was full of cattle there was many Cattle Egrets around. And they were in their beautiful breeding plumage

Bird checklist

I never use any bird lists, but since I try to make it in to Cloudbirders . A very helpful site when planning your birding trips. But they ask for a bird checklist, and if I use their service, of course I want to contribute as well. My two first bird watching trip reports was rejected by Cloudbirders.

So I started to take ideas from the reports I found on Cloudbirders. So I have started to use bird lists, eBird generate one for me and I can post it on Cloudbirders. I will post my birds on eBird and on my different “BIRDS THAT I HAVE OBSERVED” pages.

Full Thai list updated to the taxonomy, nomenclature and sequence of the IOU/IOC World Bird List. The complete checklist, including Thai names and synonyms, can be downloaded in Excel format - Thailand Bird Checklist. - Version 8.2 (2018) - found at www.norththailandbirding.com

Check lists can come in handy to find out the local name of the bird etc. And Avibase have a list with pictures and sounds, excellent!

Avibase is providing you with bird checklists from all over the world. And I´m impressed by their web page. Select country and area and you get the bird checklist. Like the PDF files I got from Avibase on the links above. You also get the checklist with pictures and sounds.

The best part is that you get the local names of the birds and the online checklist gives the names in English plus the language you have selected. But it seems like the PDF cannot handle some alphabet.

For example the Japanese language so it is blank in the PDF checklist. But it worked excellent with Swedish. But you get them in the local language on the online version.

Bird list

I only list birds I have got on picture on my list of OBSERVED BIRDS. But since I started using eBird I have changed a bit. I list all the birds on the eBird checklist. See the DAY TO DAY report in the itinerary below.

Trip Report

We left my condo at 6 o'clock in the morning and it was light traffic driving towards the northern entrance to Khao Yai. We left Bangkok on road #1 and when we reach Saraburi we got on road #2. We leave road #2 in Muak Lek and now we are driving through a beautiful landscape.

We reach the northern entrance and the park was really closed so we had to park the car at the entrance.

We get out of the car and I walk across the road and I spot one Common Tailor bird and a few Scaly-breasted Munia. It was a bit tricky to get pictures.

We went out in the forest and when we came back to the entrance area, I think the staff dwellings and we saw a bird landing behind a motorcycle. I investigating and it was a female White-rumped Shama busy building a nest in one of the storage containers on the motorcycle. What to do?

Trash the nest? The bird will be busy for a full day and in the afternoon the motorcycle will go back home and they will lose the nest. But I hope the motorcycle will be parked for another month or so.

A female was busy building a nest on a motorcycleand she was a little scared when I approached.

And the White-rumped Shama is really not scared normally. They can come up and almost sit on you. I have almost stamped on a few of them standing next to me and I have not seen them.

I almost soil myself when they take off just next to me. Anyway, she collected building material and she landed on a pole keeping an eye on me. Then she jumped to the motorcycle. After a while she didn't care about me and she landed right on the motorcycle and in to the nest.

We left the northern entrance to go look for a coffee shop to have breakfast. We found Queen of Bakery @Khao Yai and we stopped to see if they were open. They were open but no indoor seating because of the Wuhan Virus. But we could sit outside and they brought a table for us.

Up in the mountain and it was a comfy temperature and a gorgeous morning.

We left Queen of Bakery @Khao Yai and next stop is the eBird hotspot: Khao Yai Nature Life & Tours Resort and we would not have been able to find the hotspot without the GPS. And when we arrive we discover that this was the very same hotel that we had stayed at back in 2015.

We parked the car and we ran in to a Red-wattled Lapwing two minutes later. The bird started to call and the bird was calling non-stop and the bird even followed us calling all the time.

It was darn hot to walk around the area and we spotted some birds but not many as I think most of the birds are taking cover in the shadow. I saw some birds that looked like Sooty-headed Bulbuls and some other birds flying in and out of the trees.

There were pigeons and doves and I discovered the beautiful White-rumped Munia in the tree busy building a nest above the car. I tried to get some pictures but it was impossible.

We left Khao Yai Nature Life & Tours Resort and we will make one more stop before we drive back to Bangkok. We will visit the eBird hotspot: Lam Takhong Dam--Ta Ngoi scrub & farmlands Didn't take long to reach the area but we could not see the dam. The levels are very low in the Lam Takhong Dam.

We entered the first dirt track and this track took us through a farmland but not so many birds. Back on the paved road and we drove along the Lam Takhong Dam getting out on the dry parts of the Lam Takhong Dam on dirt tracks from the paved road. And you will pass ponds driving along the paved roads

Down at the water front

When we reach the water front we discover plenty cattle and with the cattle we have the Cattle Egret. There are also a lot of people collecting sea food in the Lam Takhong Dam.

There is a lot of Egrets, Pond Herons and Openbills along the streams. Paddyfield Pippits and Zitting Cisticolas are flying around. At least I think it is Zitting Cisticolas, all the warblers, well, next to impossible to ID the warblers.

We drove back to Bangkok and I was happy with the day. Back in Bangkok and we picked up a friend and we went to eat at Sweeter Day that turned out to be closed. We went next door and as social distancing was in effect we had to experience a strange seating arrangement.

We had to sit at one table each

When we were ready we went out in the car again

I will be back when they open Khao Yai National Park again. But next bird watching will be at the bird hide at Wat Tham Prathun (Tham Prathun Temple) in Chon Buri. And I hope to see the Blue-winged Pitta and of course, some other exciting birds from the hide.
