Introduction
Praek Nam Daeng Marshlands & Fish Ponds is an area, well, the name says it all. It is a very beautiful area to drive around in. The area is 3 eBird hotspots, one General Area and two for two different sois. And as you drive around it is impossible to keep track of the two hotspots and I used the Praek Nam Daeng Marshlands & Fish Ponds (general area)hotspot.

Guide
I usually don't use any bird watching Guide in / around Bangkok. I rent a taxi for the full day and the driver picks me up at 6 o'clock in the morning and we return between 3 and 7 o'clock. A very convenient way to do birding. Of course, if you don't know the area you can find a bird watching Guide.

TODAY WE ARE GOING TO USE THE TOUR COMPANY VAN
You will need a car and if you don't have your own a taxi is a very convenient way of travelling. Depending on the early morning traffic it will take about 2 hours to reach Chao Samran. You rent the taxi for a full day and it will set you back with about 1500-3000 Baht (May 2020). To make sure that the driver understand you can show the below Thai Script:

Get to Rama II Road on the west side of the Chao Phraya River and follow route #35. The road your going to is actually going south from Rama II road along the border between the two provinces Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi. This is about 7 km before Rama II end merging in to Route #4
Turn off towards south from Rama II and you can enjoy birds and a beautiful landscape, end even if you're not interested in birds it is a nice drive to follow the dirt tracks along the fish ponds and paddies.

Bangkok City Birding - A lot of interesting birding stories and information on this bird watching blog by David Gandy. Bangkok-based patch-worker in Suan Rot Fai, a large park close to the city's famous weekend market. He have recorded 150 species on his patch since 2008. As one of the only big green spaces in the city, “SRF” acts as a real magnet for migrants during spring and autumn, and holds a healthy selection of "sibes" during the winter months.

I have been very happy with the “A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand and South East Asia by Craig Robson” But I had a fire in my condo 2019 and I needed to buy a new book. I was looking for the “A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand and South East Asia by Craig Robson” as I liked the book. But this book is not available anymore so I had to buy the “A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand” by Craig Robson.
What a disappointment this was, using the pictures in the book didn't helped to ID any birds.

I met Peter Ericson, a famous bird watcher and he recommended the “Birds of Thailand” by Uthai Treesuconand Wich'yanan Limparungpatthanakij. I bought the book as soon as the book stores opened after the Wuhan virus. And I am very happy with the book and I have managed to ID some birds using the book.
This new field guide will help you identify all 1049 species to have been recorded in the country to date, including the 20 species endemic or near-endemic to Thailand.
-Taxonomy follows the HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World.
-Detailed texts covering status, habitat and behaviour, age, sex and geographical variation, voice, and confusion species.

Places to visit
Praek Nam Daeng Marshlands & Fish Ponds
Praek Nam Daengis, well, never heard of it. The eBird hotspots is the only thing I can find about it. Mostly known for the area where they caught 400 monitor lizards back in 2013. The story was in Coconut Bangkok
The area is full of fresh water ponds so the area have a lot of birds associated with fresh water ponds and rice paddies, a beautiful habitat. Close to DOWN TOWN Bangkok and easy accessible. Well worth the time to come here to look for birds and the farmland landscape.

I use the Praek Nam Daeng Marshlands & Fish Ponds (general area)as I can go around without thinking about the borders between the hotspots. And it is not easy to keep track of the hotspots driving around on the dirt tracks between the paddies and ponds.

Take off from RAMA II road and get up on the dirt road driving south. And there is a lot of dirt track so I recommend the use of a GPS as it can be very easy to get lost and to find the way back to RAMA II road. You will drive along water for most of the time as even the rice fields are full of water until harvest.
Not much traffic on the dirt roads so it is kind of easy to park along the roads if you want to get out to walk around.

I never use any bird lists, but since I try to make it in to Cloudbirders . A very helpful site when planning your birding trips. But they ask for a bird checklist, and if I use their service, of course I want to contribute as well. My two first bird watching trip reports was rejected by Cloudbirders.
So I started to take ideas from the reports I found on Cloudbirders. So I have started to use bird lists, eBird generate one for me and I can post it on Cloudbirders. I will post my birds on eBird and on my different “BIRDS THAT I HAVE OBSERVED” pages.
Full Thai list updated to the taxonomy, nomenclature and sequence of the IOU/IOC World Bird List. The complete checklist, including Thai names and synonyms, can be downloaded in Excel format - Thailand Bird Checklist. - Version 8.2 (2018) - found at www.norththailandbirding.com
Check lists can come in handy to find out the local name of the bird etc. And Avibase have a list with pictures and sounds, excellent!

Avibase is providing you with bird checklists from all over the world. And I´m impressed by their web page. Select country and area and you get the bird checklist. Like the PDF files I got from Avibase on the links above. You also get the checklist with pictures and sounds.
The best part is that you get the local names of the birds and the online checklist gives the names in English plus the language you have selected. But it seems like the PDF cannot handle some alphabet.
For example the Japanese language so it is blank in the PDF checklist. But it worked excellent with Swedish. But you get them in the local language on the online version.
Bird list
I only list birds I have got on picture on my list of OBSERVED BIRDS. But since I started using eBird I have changed a bit. I list all the birds on the eBird checklist. See the DAY-TO-DAY report in the itinerary below.

Trip Report
Praek Nam Daeng
29th of March 2022 and the taxi was waiting for me at 6 o'clock and he was very happy to see me. He have been missing our bird watching tours. We left my condo just after 6 o'clock. I was in the car and of course, I had forgotten my phone and I had to get upstairs again. I have my eBird app in my phone so I really need this.
We turned off Rama II highway when we reached Praek Nam Daeng and I turned on my eBird app and we started to look for birds driving along the ponds and paddies.

It was raining and gloom and grey for long as you could see. The sky covered by black clouds so I needed to use a crazy ISO speed to take pictures. We drove along a beautiful landscape and I was in the back looking out for birds. And my Driver have become very good in spotting birds from up front while driving.
We passed a fish pond and there were plenty terns flying around chasing food. We stopped and I got out of the car to see what kind of birds it was. Black capped tern with a black or very dark belly and I could not see any birds fitting this description in my birds of Thailand book.
I had to consult birdforum when I came back home and I was soon informed that it was Whiskered Terns flying around over the pond. There were also plenty Javan Pond Herons and Little Egrets.

We drove slowly along the road and suddenly we had one Blue-tailed Bee-eater sitting next to the road. And we discovered 8 more sitting on the wire on the other side of the road.
Really no good light for taking pictures of the beautiful Blue-tailed Bee-eater. We continue rolling slowly and we get 50 meter or so when I tell the driver to stop. There is one Asian Golden Weaver that I will try to take a picture of. Then I discover one white and blue Budgerigar sitting next to the car.

The Budgerigar takes off flying down to road where we came from after a few minutes. We make a U-turn to drive back and then we make another U-turn and we drive back again slowly trying to spot the bird again. But no luck with the Budgerigar.

Always tricky to take pictures of a bird sitting above with the bright sky in the back. Need to be lucky to get the right over exposure and if the bird stay for a while there is time to try different settings.
We left before the Drongo left, the bird changed wire but it did not bother about us.

We pass a small mud flat under some trees and I spot a Night Heron landing in the trees. We stop but we cannot see the Night Heron again. But I discover two Redshanks and two Marsh sandpipers and one Wood sandpiper. The sandpipers was not correctly ID until I was back home so I could get help from birdforum.

We continued for a couple of hundred meters before we decided to turn around and to get out on the highway to get south towards Phetchaburi Rice Paddies. We turn around and we see a Coucal sitting on a fence looking to dry its wings.
Thought it was a Great Coucal as 99.99 % if the coucals I have seen have been the greater. I think I have only seen 2 or 3 Lesser Coucals in my life.
Coming closer and I see that this one is a Lesser Coucal, and the only way for me to see the difference is by the eye colour. The Greater have clearly red eyes that you cannot miss, you see the red eyes from a long distance. So, this was the Lesser Coucal with black or dark brown eyes.

We continue towards the highway and the 7 Eleven where we will stop to buy some water, and maybe a MAX. A beautiful area and we passed a field of mud and I could see plenty waders walking around. I had just expected Pond Herons and Stilts as we have seen plenty of these birds in the fields.
So, I was surprised and I asked the driver to stop and to make a U-turn to go back so we could have a look at the birds.

There was a lot of Barn Swallows flying over the field. When I was ready with the waders I asked the driver to move a few meters forward. There was one Barn Swallow perching on a stick so I would try to get a few pictures. This was the only swallow sitting down, all the others were flying around hunting insects so not possible to get any pictures.
I was lucky and the Barn Swallow stayed and the bird did not seem to bother by us coming closer to take pictures.
We got the pictures and we made a U-turn continuing towards the 7 Eleven and the highway.

Water hyacinth
Eichhornia crassipes, commonly known as common water hyacinth, is an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and is often a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range.
Water hyacinth has been widely introduced in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and New Zealand. In many areas it has become an important and pernicious invasive species. In New Zealand it is listed on the National Pest Plant Accord which prevents it from being propagated, distributed or sold.
In large water areas such as Louisiana, the Kerala Backwaters in India, Tonlé Sap in Cambodia and Lake Victoria it has become a serious pest. The common water hyacinth has become an invasive plant species on Lake Victoria in Africa after it was introduced into the area in the 1980s.
When not controlled, water hyacinth will cover lakes and ponds entirely; this dramatically affects water flow and blocks sunlight from reaching native aquatic plants which often die. The decay processes depletes dissolved oxygen in the water, often killing fish.
The plants also create a prime habitat for mosquitos, the classic vectors of disease, and a species of snail known to host a parasitic flatworm which causes schistosomiasis (snail fever). Directly blamed for starving subsistence farmers in Papua New Guinea, water hyacinth remains a major problem where effective control programs are not in place.
Water hyacinth is often problematic in man-made ponds if uncontrolled, but can also provide a food source for goldfish, keep water clean and help to provide oxygen.
Water hyacinth often invades bodies of water that have already been affected by human activities. For example, the plants can unbalance natural lifecycles in artificial reservoirs or in eutrophied lakes that receive large amounts of nutrients.

We made the U-turn and I spotted a bird of prey soaring high up in the sky, and the bird was far away. I tried to take pictures that I planned to post on the birdforum. There are very professional members and they are able to ID birds from even very poor pictures. I have high hopes to find out the ID of the bird. We stopped as we had a lot of vegetation coming floating down the canal and my Driver spotted a Bronze-winged Jacana walking around in the vegetation.

We continued driving over the new bridge over the railway and I stopped my eBird app. We will stop to buy water before continue towards the south. The Budgerigar made it to eBirds RARE bird alert. Well, anyway, click HERE if you want to see if we find any birds at the Phetchaburi Rice Paddies.
