#120 Photo Walk and Event

Details

It's here! The annual walk for people who like to sleep in on Sunday mornings, and a chance for our members around the world to participate!

Our December walk this year is “Golden Hour to Blue Hour” Shoot that magic light with the group in Benjakitti Park. Meet on the sidewalk on the lake side of the Queen Sirikit Convention Center, and we'll go from there. This is a different time for us, and a different kind of location from the usual streets and sois. The park is full of great opportunities to make the most of that light.

For our diaspora, our members spread around the world, you can shoot for this magazine as well! During that time - Golden Hour to Blue Hour - shoot pictures wherever you are on December 3, and submit your best images per the instructions that will be posted right after the event.

It's going to be great fun and great shooting. Join us!

Sunday 3 rd of December 2023 and I have not been on any “Photo Walk” with Bangkok Photographers for many years now. My last “Photo Walk” was 8 years ago, June 2015: Nang Loeng Photo Walk

We will start at 16:30 and I arrived to Benjakitti Park (สวนเบญจกิติ) a few minutes after 4 o'clock. I turned on my eBird app and I started to look for birds while waiting.

There was a lot of people in the park and it looked like most of them were students taking their student photos. Well, maybe they call it exam photo.

I could hear an Asian Koel sitting in a tree very close to me and I went to see if I could find the bird. The bird was very loud but it was hard to spot the bird through the very dense foliage.

Propaganda

I managed to get a photo of the Asian Koel through the foliage. I also managed to get a poor picture of an Coppersmith Barbet foraging in the tree. Plenty small berries in the trees and the Coppersmith Barbet love berries.

I met the Bangkok Photographer's organizer and I told him that I would be at the meeting spot a few minutes before 16:30.

People started to arrive to the meeting point and as they were having cameras it was easy to understand where the meeting point was.

Expansion to Benjakitti Forest Park

A major expansion of the park was approved in 2006, with land granted from the Tobacco Monopoly to build Benjakitti Forest Park to celebrate Queen Sirikit's birthday in 2006.

The 652-million baht expansion makes Benjakitti Park the first park in Bangkok with a forest park, and expands the size of the park to 72 hectares. Facilities include elevated walkways, wetlands, rare plant areas, cycle paths and an outdoor amphitheatre.

The expansion fully opened in 2022.

The park is bridged to another public park, Lumphini Park by the 1.3 km long National Sports Development Fund-Sports Authority of Thailand (NSDF-SAT) Park, an elevated pedestrian walkway and bicycle trail at the southwest corner of the park.

There was about 25 photographers, professionals and hobby photographers so it will be a good mix of picture in the upcoming “Photo Walk” magazine. We leave the meeting spot and I work my way towards the Benchakitti Forest Park.

The lake was full of paddle boats and also some canoes and it looked like the people enjoyed the Sunday afternoon in the park.

I left the lake behind and I spotted on Ashy Drongo sitting in a tree when I was at the SW corner of the Benjakitti Park. Late afternoon and a sunny day had turned in to an overcast afternoon so the light was not very good for bird photography. But I gave the Ashy Drongo my best try.

Welcome to the digital prison

The last bird I see before I enter the Forest Park is an Oriental Magpie-Robin and I try to get a picture. I walk to a part in the SW corner of the Forest Park that I have never visited. I turn of the bike lane and after a few meters through the wet land I flush a waterhen.

No picture and I spotted what I think was a Plain Prinia but I could not get a picture and I continued on the concrete board walk.

I walk toward the north and I cross the bike lane and I am back in well know territory again. There are plenty crows and I try to get a picture of one of them that are sitting in the top of a tree. Not much light and I try to over expose the photo to get some light in the black bird.

I continue to the Main Amphitheatre (อัฒจันทร์กลาง) and I spot three prinias and a group of Scaly-breasted Munias. I was not surprised as I see them in this area every time I visit the park.

I continue towards the exit in the NE corner, the sky is turning black and the light is really not any good. I still hope to get a glimpse of a kingfisher before I leave the park.

I spot the second Ashy Drongo and a little bit later I see my second Coppersmith Barbet for the day. I am close to the parking and this is a new area for me. A parking lot means that cars can get here and I tried to book a Lineman taxi.

Real Men of Women’s Sports

I had been a nice afternoon and even though it was late I managed to get more pictures than I had expected so I was happy when I was back home. My plan is to go to eBird hotspot: Wat Tham Prathun in Chonburi on Tuesday.

We will have BBQ at my friend's house when we're coming back to Bangkok after the bird watching.

I did yoga Monday morning and my teacher asked if we should do yoga Tuesday morning. I told her that I was going to look for birds and she told me Tuesday was a holiday so it would be easy to get a taxi to get to the gym.

And holiday means that the bird hide at Wat Tham Prathun have a risk to be crowded. So, I changed the days and we will go to look for birds on Wednesday. And my friend has already prepared the BBQ and the tea pot.

He have prepared the tea pot and the BBQ

I'm at Sukhumvit Soi 19 and I decide to go to buy soap at Tops Market. I see that they have nice looking pork collar and I buy a bag for the BBQ tomorrow. Better I do it myself, or we don't know what kind of meat we will get.

and my alarm goes off at 4 o'clock in the morning and I am on the parking lot at 6 o'clock and my friend is here to pick me up one minute after 6 o'clock.

We will pick up our friend in Samut Prakan before going to look for birds at eBird hotspot: Lat Krabang. And when we will drive to eBird hotspot: Wat Tham Prathun when we are ready at Lat Krabang. And we will have the BBQ when we are back in Samut Prakan.

I had brought the pork collar in a plastic box for him to keep in the fridge. I had made a marinade when I came home from Tops Market so the meat will be tasting very well by the time we will start the BBQ. Our friend was waiting for us when we arrived at 06 forty.

I took the box with the meat and he returned with 4 bottles of refreshments. I had brought 3 of my own so I do not think I need his bottles. But it is welcome with some “back-up” refreshments.

We left Samut Prakan behind and we were soon on the highway going towards Lat Krabang. We passed Suvarnabhumi International and when we took of the highway we had to wait at an intersection. And while waiting we had a Pond Heron landing on the fence next to the road.

I start my eBird app at 07:47 and we are leaving the paved road a few minutes after that. We spot a few weavers on the left-hand side. I am pretty sure that it is a Baya Weaver/ นกกระจาบธรรมดา, at least after consulting my bird book, นกเมืองไทย (Birds of Thailand)

Baya and Asian Golden females look almost exactly the same. Suddenly our driver pointed to the right.
- A green bird! I never seen a bird like this before! Very beautiful!

It was a green pigeon and I tried to get some pictures. But there was grass between me and the bird so the pictures turned out a wee bit blurry.

We continued towards west on the dirt track and we made a U-turn when we reached the fish ponds. There was one Grey Heron flying over the fish ponds and thanks to that we discovered a second Grey Heron when the flying heron attached the second heron behind the long grass.

We drive back towards the paved road in the east and I spotted one Little Ringed Plover/ นกหัวโตเล็กขาเหลือง foraging in one of the paddies.

Back on the paved road and we continue towards east to check out the fish ponds. And I have spotted some interesting birds on this road before. So, I keep the eBird app running while driving along this stretch of the road.

There were Little Grebes/ นกเป็ดผีเล็ก in the ponds as well, and of course egrets.

We continue and I spot one Common Moorhen/ นกอีล้ำ, adult bird foraging and I am soon to discover that the bird has 2 babies as well.

Bird watching at eBird hotspot: Lat Krabang--Thap Yao paddies & aquaculture ponds
Today's track at eBird hotspot: Lat Krabang--Thap Yao paddies & aquaculture ponds

We leave Lat Krabang behind driving towards the eBird hotspot: Wat Tham Prathun and it is about 90 minutes to drive there. And as soon as we're on the Bangkok - Pattaya Highway it is highway almost all the day to the bird hide.

We park the car and we are a wee bit disappointed to discover that there is one car parked. And there is one bird watcher walking toward the bird hide. We had expected to be alone as it is in the middle of the week.

Original plan was to have come here yesterday, but as it was holiday, we cancelled the visit the bird hide yesterday as we expected the bird hide to be full.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there were only two bird watchers in the hide. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that they had built a new bird hide.

I put out the worms for the birds to eat and I took my seat and there was not much action, a couple of Oriental Magpie Robins. Tooke a while, but one fantail and an Stripe-throated Bulbul arrived to the bird bath.

5 Oriental Magpie Robins and I never seen so many here before, and one of the males looked to be very big. All of them enjoyed the worms. And the squirrels ate worms like there was no tomorrow.

We had White-rumped Shamas/ นกกางเขนดง coming to enjoy the worms and one of them came in to the hide sitting next to us. Not scared at all as I am used to see them in this area.

I was almost stepping on one of them at one of my previous visits to the bird hide. We spent 90 minutes in the hide and we were getting hungry and we decided to drive back to the BBQ in Samut Prakan and we are soon on the highway heading to Bangkok.

Time to leave the bird hide

We get in to the car and we are soon on the highway and we are hungry. So, we are really looking forward to getting the BBQ started. And we start right away when we arrive.

We are soon having the fire up and running and as we are hungry, we put the meat on the grill a wee bit to early. I don't mind the black but my friends are scared of cancer.

The BBQ tasted very good and we finished 2kg ++ pork collar and I was very full when we left our friend to get back in to Down Town Bangkok.

and I started the day, of course with tea and my omelette. But whenChocolate MousseI was ready I made chocolate mousse. First time ever, I have made it before, but with powder.

Today I wanted to try to make the chocolate mousse from scratch.

It turned out quite well, a couple of changes to the recipe, adding some stuff that I like. And we have what I think is the first chocolate mousse in the world with a “crunch”

I had all the ingredients needed for the porky pancakes so we got started right away when my friend arrived, well, we had a quick soda water before we started.

But my friend discovered what I was doing.

We start to do the pancake, using the oil from the fried pork belly. Putting the batter in a pan and our friend took some of the pork from the other pan to put in the batter.

Oh Boy!! Was it delicious or what? Best pancakes I have had in many many years. The serving platter was soon empty and I cleared the table. I whipped some cream and we were soon digging in to the dessert.

I have not had have chocolate mousse for many years. I have always done it by mixing milk and chocolate mousse powder. So, I was excited to try my own home-made chocolate mousse with crunch. I am pretty sure it is a world premiere for mousse with crunch.

And it was good and we were digging in. But we could not finish all of it and I was a little bit worried. My self-discipline leaves a lot to wish for and I was worried that I would finish the chocolate mousse by myself later on.

So, I threw the remaining chocolate mousse and now there is no chance for me to eat any more chocolate mousse. And I was in peace with myself.

and it was just a few minutes to get a Lineman car so I got off towards the Samut Prakan Ancient City (เมืองโบราณ สมุทรปราการ) earlier than expected. I will meet my friend there at 9 o'clock when they open.

My friend will bring his Grand Daughter and we will drive around the Muangboran The Ancient City (พระที่นั่งสรรเพชญปราสาท อยุธยา) in a golf cart to look for birds.

I arrived at 8 thirty, but 30 minutes passed very quickly and my friend was soon arriving. We bought tickets and we rented a golf cart, and as my friend's grand-daughter joined us today, we had a 4 seater. 2 seater and 4 seater is the same price.

We run the same tracks that we had running the couple of time I have been here. Now it is supposed to be the cold season and I had expected a lot of exciting birds.

We went of road at the service area (junk yard) and not one single bird, well, a fantail and a dove. This area had had plenty birds on previous visits.

We left the service area (junk yard) and we were back on the tracks driving towards the garbage dump. Driving on the paved track to the garbage sorting station and we drive along water.

An area with plenty birds, but today there was only a prinia and a couple of mynas. Of course, doves sitting on the fence.

We turn around at the sorting place and we drive back along the water. Instead of turning right to get back in to The Ancient City we turn left and we are at the garbage dump.

We were lucky to have a “All Terrain” golf cart

Garbage dump, some egrets and not much more to see. We are coming of road and my friend need to muster all his navigation skills to get us out of there.

Time passed quickly and I am going to pick up my new computer in Bang Na. I have bought a new MSI STEALTH 17STUDIO A13VH-085TH. They will install 64 GB RAM and two 4TB SSD and I told them that I would be there around lunch time.

We drive back towards the gate and the last bird picture I take is the cormorants sitting on a wire. There were 16 of them sitting on the wires. And again, impossible to get good pictures as the bird was between me and the sun.

Bird watching at Muangboran The Ancient City (พระที่นั่งสรรเพชญปราสาท อยุธยา)
Today's track at Ancient City

I booked a car on my Lineman app and we were soon on the way to Bang Na. We will pick up the computer and we will go to have lunch at S & P at Robinsons Samut Prakan. My computer was notS & P Restaurantready, hell, they could not even find the computer.

They did not know that I was coming to pick up the computer.

I was upset, at least to say. They called around and they found the computer, still in the box. TheYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stRAM was not installed and my new SSD were not even in the shop. At least to say, poor service. The Technician will start the job ASAP.

We decided that they would send the computer to S & P at Robinsons in Samut Prakan. Would take an hour or two. We took a taxi to S & P for our lunch.

I had not been to S & P for a very long time so I was kind of excited to eat the chicken with salad. My friend had ice cream and I was really lucky. They were out of cake so I did not order any dessert.

But where is my new computer? We left S & P to go shopping at Tops next door when they called. The computer arrived and we could leave Robinsons.

and I was back home after a yoga session and 10 rounds with The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์) at Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym. Salad, double salad and a bucket of tea before my shower.

I had a constitutionalYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwalking down to Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 for the Photo Talk with Bangkok Photographers. We will meet at 6 thirty to have a look at the pictures from the last Photo Walk.

Looking at pictures at the Photo Talk

There were two people on the second floor when I arrived to the pub 6 o'clock. Second floor was for Bangkok Photographers and I took a seat and I asked for a soda water. I like to be early watching the people arriving instead of them watching me when I arrive.

We were about 15 people on the 2nd floor when the kicked off the photo show.

Interesting to see how other people think when they take their pictures, and also interesting to see what the other photographers think about the pictures.

It lasted for about 2 hours and 2 soda waters to look through the pictures and I walked back home on an Christmas Decorated Sukhumvit.
