Birding/ Bird watching on a scooter in Thailand

Thursday 18 th of July 2024 and it was a sunny morning even though the most of the sky was covered in dark grey clouds. I decided to go check out the ponds east of Samut Prakan. Flying to Japan and we take off over Samut Prakan and it is possible to see the huge areas with ponds.

So I decided to go down to Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 103, 20 minutes or so from my apartment. There is only one eBird hotspot in the area: Bang Pla--Hwy. 3064 aquaculture ponds

Buying a refreshment in the slot machine before going out to the parking and my scooter. Driving east on Sukhumvit and I turned off when I reached Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 103. It was a little confusing and I turned back to get up on a path. Reaching one of the ponds but it was a dead and and I went back to the paved road.

Going north for 100 meters or so and I turned off Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 103 and I was soon among the fish ponds where they grow fish and shrimp.

Starting the eBird app at 09:30 and I continue out in the wilderness. The firs birds I see is of course an Eurasian Tree Sparrow (นกกระจอกบ้าน) and there is one Little Egret (นกยางเปีย), too far away for any good pictures.

Reporting one Little Grebe (นกเป็ดผีเล็ก) and it turns out that it is an orange bird in my eBird app. So, I really wanted to have a picture but the bird was way too far away.

Getting up on a sand road and I had to drive very carefully. Well, the mud tracks are not any better. Rainy season and mud and sand is very slippery.

Spotting a few Oriental Pratincole (นกแอ่นทุ่งใหญ่) and I stop to try to get pictures before I continue to the dead end. I spot Plain Prinias (นกกระจิบหญ้าสีเรียบ) and Asian Golden Weavers.

One baby Asian Golden Weaver (นกกระจาบทอง) sitting on a twig flapping its folded wings while an adult feeding the baby.

There is a lot of small birds flying around but I cannot ID the birds. But most likely prinias and weavers. There are cormorants but not close enough for me to give correct ID of the birds so I reported them as Little/Indian Cormorant in my eBird app.

There was also two Purple Herons (นกกระสาแดง) in the pond.

Coming back to the mud track and I can hear the well-known sound from the Red-wattled Lapwing (นกกระแตแต้แว้ด) and the Black-winged Stilt (นกตีนเทียน)

Red-wattled Lapwing (นกกระแตแต้แว้ด) was not very shy and I managed to get a picture. There was 8 Black-winged Stilt (นกตีนเทียน) in the pond and some of them were young.

There is a lot of prinias in the area but I only got pictures of one more Plain Prinia.

I continue along the mud tracks and I stop to overlook one of the ponds when a lady on a motorcycle approach from behind me. She stopped 10 meters from me and she asked what I was doing driving around here.

I told her that I was here to look for birds. I asked if it was any problem and she said no. Her family owned the land, 100 Rai and she had been out to feed the fish.

We were talking and she told me that she had birds visiting her farm and then she said bird park so I was a little bit confused. But I told her that we could go have a look and I followed her with my scooter.

We stop to feed the fishes in one of the ponds before we continue to her house.

We parked at the woman's house and she brought me a bottle of water. There were several Asian Golden Weavers in the bushes around her house.

There were also, at least, two Plain Prinia (นกกระจิบหญ้าสีเรียบ) in the bushes with the Asian Golden Weaver (นกกระจาบทอง) This was the second young getting feed by a parent I have spotted today. The babies are in adult size but still need assistance with the feeding.

The woman called someone and we were soon on our way and I followed the woman on her motorcycle along the dirt road.

We reached the paved road and I stopped to turn off my eBird app before we continue. We turn left when we reach Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 103 and we drive south towards Sukhumvit Road. Reaching the bride crossing Khlong Mai to Sukhumvit Road.

Khlong Mai is going along Sukhumvit from Samut Prakan to Khlong Dan.

We stop in front of a gate and my new friend gets off her motorcycle to open a big gate. I was puzzled, is this her farm? We entered and my worst fears turned true. It was a bird prison. There were a lot of big cages with parrots in them.

Walking around with my new friend and we speak with a girl cleaning a pool with turtles. I showed some interest just to be polite, but I said that I was not interested in jailed birds and we left again after 10 minutes.

My new friend said that I was welcome back any time to look for birds on her land. Well, actually, she wished that I would come back soon. I turned left going north on Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 103 and I was soon at a dead end.

Checking my map and I need to get back on Sukhumvit and drive up on Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 113 to reach the eBird hotspot: Bang Pla--Hwy. 3064 aquaculture ponds

Coming up on Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 113 and I turn off after a few hundred meters. There is a dirt road going out to the fish ponds to see if I can see any birds.

Gloom and grey for long as I can see and it looks to start rain any second but I continue out in to the wilderness. There are more of the eBird “orange” bird, the Little Egret/ นกยางเปีย. I could count to three of them.

There was a lot of Ferral Pigeons and sparrows on the dirt road. Driving along the dirt road and there was a lot of birds in the reeds and I managed to ID one Yellow-vented Bulbul (นกปรอดหน้านวล). There were of course many prinias in the reeds.

One Grey Heron (นกกระสานวล) was flushed from the reeds when I passed and it took off over the pond and no pictures. There were storks soaring high above the fish ponds.

They were so high so it was impossible to give proper ID. But it was either Asian Openbills (นกปากห่าง) or Painted Stork (นกกาบบัว)

Today's track at Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 113, Samut Prakan

Turning off my eBird app when I come back to Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 113. I continue north on Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 113 for a couple of kilometres and I turn left to reach the eBird hotspot: BangScooterPla--Hwy. 3064 aquaculture ponds

There were some ponds and I turned on my eBird app, but I was soon turning it off again. There was really no access to the eBird hotspot, at least not any that I could find.

So, I drove back home again and I had 200 meters to go whenYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stit started to rain so I had been lucky.

I had spent the day on mud tracks so my scooter is in need of a wash and I will have to go visit my friend to wash my scooter.

And the upcoming weekend will be good for washing my scooter. And if the weather is OK, I might go birding with my scooter again on Sunday morning.

+++++++++++++++
Saturday 20 th of July 2024
and I took off towards the border between Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao. There are three eBird hotspots that I want to check out.
• Khlong Dan--Hwy. 1005 aquaculture ponds
• Khlong Dan--Wat Pan Prasitharam (Pan Prasitharam Temple) vicinity
• Khlong Dan--Ban Mon marshes & aquaculture ponds

Chachoengsao

Chachoengsao (ฉะเชิงเทรา) is a town (thesaban mueang) in central Thailand, capital of Chachoengsao Province. It is on the banks of the Bang Pakong River. It includes tambon Na Mueang and parts of Ban Mai, Bang Tin Pet, Wang Takhian, and Sothon of Mueang Chachoengsao District. In 2006, it had a population of 60,893.

The town was established in 1549 during the reign of King Maha Chakkrapat of Ayutthaya and originally was a centre for military recruitment. During the reign of King Maha Thammaracha, the kingdom was in a weak condition due to being defeated by the Burmese. Phraya Lawaek, the Khmer king, conscripted Thais from several towns including Chachoengsao to be in his work force.

Chachoengsao is sometimes referred to as "Paet Riu", a name derived from large fish locally caught in the past. Paet Riu literally means "eight cuts" or slices which refers to the way the fish was cooked and served as a local dish in Chachoengsao.

The town is about 50 km east of Bangkok and can be accessed by train.

Took me around one hour to get to the first eBird hotspot: Khlong Dan--Hwy. 1005 aquaculture ponds and I started my eBird app at 08:41 and I get out on the dirt roads around the aquaculture ponds after having turned my scooter in to a “birding” scooter.

Before taking off I report Little Egrets (นกยางเปีย) and three Black-winged Stilt (นกตีนเทียน) in the first pond. I could also report two Streak-eared Bulbul (นกปรอดสวน) sitting on the wire and two Zebra Dove (นกเขาชวา) I reported the bird in my eBird app and I took off just to stop after a few meters to report one Javan Pond Heron (นกยางกรอกพันธุ์ชวา)

Coming to the end of the dirt road and I could report one Common Myna (นกเอี้ยงสาริกา) and one Plain Prinia (นกกระจิบหญ้าสีเรียบ) before driving back to the paved road.

Crossing the paved road and I got up on a mud track along some fish ponds. There were not many birds, sparrows, prinias and Great Myna (นกเอี้ยงหงอน). Back at the paved road and I cross the road again. I turn in to a gravel road next to the gravel road I started at.

Stopping after about 50 meters to take a picture of a Plain Prinia (นกกระจิบหญ้าสีเรียบ) sitting on a wire. Reaching a house and a couple of sheds. There are a lot of cars in front of one of the houses at the compound.

There were some excavators and some other equipment. I spotted a couple of weavers and mynas. There were doves and one bird stuck out as different, one Blue-tailed Bee-eater (นกจาบคาหัวเขียว) sitting on a wire, too far away for any pictures.

One old man came out and asked where I was going and I told him that I was looking for birds. Oh, he said and he came walking towards me. I told him that I was looking for birds and I was taking pictures.

He started to show me around and he showed me a weaver nest that had been abandoned after the breeding season.

I told them that my next stop was the Wat Pan Prasitharam. He asked about my Thai Buddha amulet (พระเครื่อง) and he went inside to get some amulets to show me. We were joined by a young man and we were chatting about Wat Pan Prasitharam. They told me that it was a famous place.

The young man left and I was about to leave when he came back screaming at me to wait. He handed me an amulet from Wat Pan Prasitharam. I said thank you very much and I continued to look for birds.

Driving back to the paved road and there is another gravel road next to my gravel road with some vegetation between, I stop to take a picture of a young Little Grebe (นกเป็ดผีเล็ก)

There is another motorcycle coming after me and on the home-made side car there was a girl and a boy. They stopped and the girl asked me what I had done at the compound. I told her that I was looking for birds.

She asked if I knew about the Bang Pu Recreation Area and I told her that I lived close by the area and I used to go there to look for birds.

She spoke English like a native with American accent so I asked if she had been to England or USA for studies.
- No
- Where did you learn English?

I asked what she was doing here and she told me it was her land. I thought she looked too young for that, around 20 years old and she told me she was 16.

I said bye bye and I continued towards the paved road. I spot something looking like a bird nest with a big white bird in it. At least it looked like that and I was soon to see that it was a Javan Pond Heron (นกยางกรอกพันธุ์ชวา) and I was really surprised. I have never seen a lone egret or heron nest before.

They are always building in the same tree and there can be hundres of them in the tree.

But it was strange, it was an adult bird in the tree with breeding plumage. There were two other adults next to the nest. I think it was a nest. The other two birds looked to be together with the bird in the nest.

I approached and the three of them took off and they returned to the nest when I had passed. I do not know what the birds were up to and I made an inquiry on birdforum.

Turning off my eBird app and I drove north passing Wat Pan Prasitharam and I continued north even though I should have turned south towards Sukhumvit to get back home.

I continued nort and then towards west driving through the country side enjoying the sights.

I followed a paved road, crossing bridges in a westerly direction towards Samut Prakan and I willYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sthopefully get there.

I was surprised when the paved road came to a dead end at a house. Why building a road ending up in the middle of nowhere? I made a U-turn and I drove back towards Wat Pan Prasitharam.

I had seen a car wash at the temple and I decided to stop there to wash my scooter. There was a girl washing her car and I asked how it was working. I moved Canon EOS R3 with the Canon RF 100-500mm IS USM from the front basket to under the seat.

She helped me and I put a 20 ฿ note in the machine and she showed how to spray water and then to push the yellow button to get foam. There were three buttons with three different colours.

I returned home to leave my camera and then I took off to pick up my friend. We took off to the motorcycle mechanic and he will make a holder for my e-cigarette and it will be conveniently just in front of me if I need a drag while driving.

The holder will be ready on Wednesday as we have three days holiday in Thailand. I can have my e-cig around my neck for a couple of days more.

A couple of months ago and I changed the seat on my Honda Giorno, the red colour has faded away, and my friend's cat have had a fight with the seat. So, I need to change the upholstery and we took off to the shop.

I decided to go all black this time and we went to have tea while they changed the cover on my seat. They told us that it would take about two hours.

I took my friend back home and we decided to go to look for birds at เมืองโบราณ สมุทรปราการ, Muangboran, The Ancient City tomorrow and I will pick him up at 08:45.

I drove back home and I was very happy with the new cover on my Honda Giorno seat.

In the golf cart on our way to look for birds

The first bird I tried to get a photo of was a Malaysian Pied Fantail (นกอีแพรดแถบอกดำ) and we also spotted an Zebra Dove (นกเขาชวา) sitting on a wire.

There are of course, mynas, Common Myna (นกเอี้ยงสาริกา) and Great Myna (นกเอี้ยงหงอน) as can be seen all over Thailand. We passed along the reeds and we made a U-turn to check out a red bird in the reeds.

Coming back and we flush a bittern. Sitting 50 cm from us, but it was next to impossible to spot the bird before it took off. We never saw the red bird again and we made yet another U-turn.

Driving back again and we spotted one Blue-tailed Bee-eater (นกจาบคาหัวเขียว) sitting on the wire between me and the sun, but I gave it my best to try to get a picture.

Fighting with a worm and I tried to take a picture of the Eurasian Tree Sparrow (นกกระจอกบ้าน) The bird was struggling with the worm, but I got my picture.

Passing a group of beautiful ladies coming here and they told us that they were going to have a look at Muangboran, The Ancient City (เมืองโบราณ สมุทรปราการ) But we could not see them anywhere in the area. But there were busses full of tourists in the area.

Overcast when we arrived to The Ancient City and it was kind of a comfortable temperature. The sun started to shine and it became very hot.

We ended up in an adventure almost getting stuck in a garden. The path was OK when we entered but it became a dead end and we had to make a quick dash over the lawn.

Coming to a step and my friend had to get out to check if we could pass it with the golf cart.

We end up in the garbage area and we spot a Little Egret (นกยางเปีย) and a bit further in to the garbage dump we spotted an Oriental Pratincole (นกแอ่นทุ่งใหญ่) Otherwise there was not many birds and we drove back to check out the recycling area.

Only one Blue-tailed Bee-eater (นกจาบคาหัวเขียว) and I was a little disappointed with the garbage and recycling area. We usually see a lot of birds here.

Sunshine and it was getting very hot. And we were also getting a wee bit hungry. We asked if there was a restaurant with AC and we drove there, but busses were unloading loads of people and we did not bother to go inside. We were surprised to find a second restaurant and we went inside to have a look.

Buffet, 280 ฿ and I think you understand what kind of buffet it was. We left without having anything to eat.

I had been at MACRO at Srinagarindra the other day going back home from the gym. I had seen some sausages that looked very good. We decided to go buy some sausages and cook them back home. And we could have good tea with the food.

We drove back to the entrance and we returned the rented golf cart.

Today's track at The Ancient City

I had been at MACRO the other day and these sausages looked very good. Two different kinds and I had decided to buy both to see which one was the best. I have bought a lot of sausages in Thailand, many very good, and many straight up terrible.

And I never remember which sausage that was good. But this time, two kinds only and I will take pictures. And if I find any of the sausages good, I will know for the future what to buy.

Back home and we started to cook the sausages, slightly different colours so it should be easy toThai Sausagekeep track of the GOOD and the BAD.

Taking our seats drooling by anticipation and we will soon have the verdict.

TWO CONTESTANTS AND NO WINNER! This was easy, I will never buy any of the sausagesThai Sausageagain. My friend did not mind the sausages, but it was not in my taste.

But I am on to something here, next time, buying two kinds and I will eventually find the good sausage. I still have suasages from Sweden in my freezer so I have some time to find the good Thai sausage.

Or I will have to fly back to Sweden to replenish.

Thursday 25 th of July 2024
and as I have pain in my legs, arms, neck and in the back after all the clinching with The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์) Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym. No clinching for a week now, but still, some pain.

So, I loaded my Canon EOS R3 with the Canon RF 100-500mm IS USM lens on my Honda Giorno and I took off towards east on Sukhumvit Road.

I will visit the eBird hotspot: Wat Samae Khao Charoen Rat (Samae Khao Charoen Rat Temple) that I discovered on eBird yesterday. No checklists submitted from this hotspot so I will be the first to submit a checklist from this hotspot.

My first stop will be at the eBird hotspot: Khlong Dan--Hwy. 1005 aquaculture ponds to have a look at the Javan Pond Heron (นกยางกรอกพันธุ์ชวา) that was in the nest last time.

The bird is still on the nest and I take a picture before I drive back to Sukhumvit Road. I could not see any babies but I will try to come back in a week or so to see if there will be any babies. I don't want to disturb the bird so I had to take the picture from quite a distance.

Driving east on Sukhumvit and I pass Wat Samae Khao Charoen Rat and I make a U-turn when I reach the U-turn place. Starting the eBird app at 09:24 and the first bird I report is a Great Myna (นกเอี้ยงหงอน)

Driving along a street going through a fish village and I can report Eurasian Tree Sparrow (นกกระจอกบ้าน) and some doves on my way. There was a young Barn Swallow sitting on the wire along the street and I made a recording of the bird.

Recorded with my phone using the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

Young Barn Swallow sitting on the wire along the street. Adults came to feed the young bird. The adults had the long tail but the young did not have the long tail.

We can hear a Greater Coucal in the beginning of the recording.

It was interesting to see the baby swallow getting feed on the wire. And I managed to get the Greater Coucal next to the road on the recording as well

I stop on a bridge over the fish harbour and I can hear one, most likely two Collared Kingfisher (นกกินเปี้ยว) Flying around in the mangroves but no pictures. I got a picture of the fishing harbour from the bridge and I continued with my scooter.

Turning of the bridge and I drove along the fishing harbour, that have turned in to mud flats. I reached the dead end after 100 meters or so. There was a house on stilts and I spotted five Little Egrets.

I brought out my Canon EOS R3 with the Canon RF 100-500mm IS USM lens from under my seat on my Honda Giorno to take a picture of the egrets.

I could hear some ruckus from under the house and suddenly there was one Black-crowned Night Heron (นกแขวก) among the egrets.

I got a few pictures and I put the camera in the basket and I drive back towards Wat Samae Khao Charoen Rat leaving the water front behind. The boats were laying on the mud waiting for the high water.

There are two Collared Kingfisher (นกกินเปี้ยว) sitting on a branch, but when I'm about to take a picture, they take off. But I got a picture of an Javan Pond Heron (นกยางกรอกพันธุ์ชวา) sitting in a dead tree. in the mangroves next to the road.

Two Malaysian Pied Fantail (นกอีแพรดแถบอกดำ) was chasing each other on a pile of mussel shells next to the road.

Approaching Wat Samae Khao Charoen Rat and I spot four stork soaring high above. I cannot see if it is the Asian Openbill (นกปากห่าง) or if it is the Painted Stork (นกกาบบัว) I try to get a picture so I can ID the birds.

I get a picture good enough to see that it is four Asian Openbill (นกปากห่าง) and I report them in my eBird app.

At the temple there is not much to report, of course sparrows, doves and pigeons. And as my eBird app had stopped by itself I decided to leave to go back to Sukhumvit.

Today's track at Wat Samae Khao Charoen Rat

Reaching Sukhumvit and I stopped to put my camera under my seat. I donned my helmet and I threw myself out on Sukhumvit. Driving back to Samut Prakan where I will go to see the motorcycle mechanic.

My vape holder was ready yesterday but I decided to pick it up today instead.

Took me about one hour to get back to Samut Prakan. It was an annoying drizzle when I left Samut Prakan this morning. But it soon stopped and I had had good weatherYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stduring the whole time. Approaching Samut Prakan and it started to rain again.

We installed the vape holder and I was very happy for the holder. And I am also very happy for having found this motorcycle mechanic back when I bought my scooter.

I went to see my friend but he was in the shower and I drove back home again. My friend will come over to have Skånsk meat sauce and spaghetti when he is ready with the shower.

My scooter is very dirty after my last bird watching so I need to clean it, the last thing I do in July so the scooter will look good when we step in to August.

Click HERE to see if I see any birds in August 2024.
