Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk

Saturday 1 st of June 2013 and we were still anchored when I came on the bridge at 8 o'clock, no surprise. My watch passed pretty quickly and I was soon eating smoked salmon in the mess room. Our Cadet wanted to check our fixed gas sampling but I was tired and we decided to start at
Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk3 o'clock in the afternoon.

But some foocking twat was banging on top of the funnel and it was impossible to sleep so we were in the CCR before 3 o'clock. Well, around 3 o'clock, I gave his NOKIA another try to see if this was something I wanted to buy.

We were soon giving up with the fixed gas detectors, didn't work and later on I found out that it was new equipment installed, but they were still having the old instructions. So I might give it another try after lunch tomorrow.

I went to the crews TV room on my way back to the cabin for a few words with our Deck Cadet and the Lloyd Trainee. When I left our Russian 2nd officer called me.
- VERY GOOD! He said pointing to his computer
He had found www.aladdin.st and he was busy reading

Sunday 2 nd of June 2013
and it was a gorgeous morning when I came on the bridge, still anchored. The strong wind from yesterday was gone and it was quite warm in the sun.

Time turned very quick and I was surprised when our 2nd Officer stepped in on the bridge quarter past 11. And he was carrying gas detectors, sample bottles and equipment. We had talked about it yesterday, but I never expected him to show up.

But here he was eager to learn. That's the motherfoocking spirit we're looking for!

Gas detector training

Checking the test tube

We started with the multi gas detector, Rieken Keiki 517, at least I think it is what they call theAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskmachine. Testing with test gas and then we calibrated the instrument so he know how to do it.

He was most interested in our handpump and test tubes for chemicals but I told him to cool down a bit. He was always 3 steps ahead, one hand on the gas detector and the other hand and his mind on thetest tubes. So he was happy when it was time for the tubes.

Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk

I started to explain how to get sample gas from the bottom of the tank as the rubber hoses for the test tubes are too short to reach all the way down the tank. The hose for the gas detector easy reach the bottom of the tank and we put a sample bag on the outlet from the multi gas detector and we filled the bag with sample gas.

I showed him where to find how much gas we had to draw through the tube to get the correct reading. When I was ready we checked the indication on the tube, of course, 200 - 3000ppm Hydrocarbon will go to full when we test with an 8% gas. But our 2nd Officer got the picture.
- OK, now it is you turn, I said
- What?
- Yes, you have to do it now!

This is fun and if you have support from a company ashore it can be very fun. I have had Swedish and Norwegian gas companies and I always exchange ideas with them and I have learnt a lot from them. And last time I had a “EXCHANGE” of ideas I got the following reply from Norway:
“Du skal få poeng for kreativiteten når det kommer til gassmåling!”

It is in Norwegian only and I don't want to translate it. But we completed our Training and our 2nd Officer went for a quick lunch. Of course, before he left I signed for his completed gas detectionYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stcourse and he turned cartwheels down the stairs to the mess room. And yes, I could hear him all the way down to the mess room on A-deck.
- YIPPEEE!! I MADE IT!!! GUYS!!! I MADE IT!! YIPPEEEE!!!!

Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk
Sucking up sample gas through the test tube

So let's see if the next guy is as enthusiastic. I could not help but thinking about my gas detection course with Captain and Chief Engineer aboard M/T Ekstar a few years back. And they were as enthusiastic, but they were better than our 2nd Officer to restrain themselves.

And the guys aboard M/T Ternvik was as enthusiastic as the guys in Ekstar. Whenever we got   a few minutes of time with nothing to do we took the opportunity to learn something.

And I hope you notice the “ON DEMAND” valve, only ship I seen a valve like this was aboard   Maersk Claudia. And when they sold the ship I stole the valve. Will come in handy on my next   Maersk ship. We approached Hong Kong and I changed my mind, if they want us to have a on   demand valve onboard they would put them aboard.

So I left it behind aboard Maersk Claudia in Hong Kong. And what do I know about stuff like   this? They know better in the office with their experience.

I finished my lunch and our Deck Cadet and I went to the CCR to continue with the fixed gas detection system. We calibrated the gas detection sensor for the ballast tanks with a screw driverAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskand a volt meter.

We wasted a full bottle of test gas before we had managed to adjust the sensor to 120mV representing 50% LEL. For ZERO adjustments we didn't need any gas, just to adjust the sensor to 40mV with a screw driver and the volt meter. We were busy adjusting, looking at the volt meter andYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwasting gas when the Lloyd Trainee came in to the CCR with a fish.

He was obviously spending the Sunday on deck fishing and he had caught a small fish. But it turned out that the fish got caught on our Cadet's fishing gear and not his own. They obviously have had an argument about using baitAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskor not. Our Cadet had refusedto use bait and he was happy that he had caught the fish. Well, his fishing gear was unattended, well, never mind. Enough with the commotion!
- Yippee ay ay motherfoockers, exciting, but we have plenty to do here, I said.

When we were ready we made an entry permit and risk assessment for entry in to the pump room to test the sensors we have there, there are 6 of them and we expected it to take some time so permit valid for 2 hours.

We were out of there in 30 minutes or so. Well, Deck Cadet stayed for 30 minutes, I was out in 10 because I had to be in the CCR to check the readings whileAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskhe was applying gas to the sensors.

A quick power nap before dinner and uploading the latest on my web page before going to the bridge to enjoy yet another evening with tea and nice weather.
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stHopefully

I had not been on bridge for long before our 2nd Officer came up to make yet anotherphone call about his appearance on www.aladdin.st and this time it was a former girlfriend.

I understood foock all, but I could hear aladdin.st and internet between all the Russian words. I was soon growing tired and I continued with my tea while watching the gloom and grey overYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stRotterdam anchorage. A beautiful day had turned in to a shitty evening with increasing wind from the North bringing nothing but cold.

Cold or not, our Lloyd Trainee had tasted blood and he was on the poop deck fishing with the otherYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stfishing “entusiasts” dressed in winter coveralls. I was looking at them and it both felt and looked cold.

It was darn cold and I was soon inside sipping on my tea. The guy a relieved in Rotterdam on the 7th of May will be back, and it looks like I will have to go home. What a shame, I had been looking forward to staying here enjoying the summer and to be back home in October. Now it looks like I will go straight to Roy Maersk without any holiday and what I know we will only trade between Singapore, Indonesia and India. A nice area in the winter, but I would prefer to stay in Europe during the summer.

Monday 3 rd of June 2013
and today the Cadets changed so the guy that had spent the last 3 weeks in the engine room came on the bridge. Previous Deck Cadet went down to the engine room.Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard MaerskI did a work permit for the guys so they could continue painting the mast and one work permit for 2 guys to grease the life boat davit.

When everything was set I had time for a few sip on my tea bucket before our Pump Man, Cadet and 2nd officer came back on the bridge. They had brought all the gas equipment that I had used with the other 2nd Officer yesterday.

Time for a new gas detection crash course. Our 2nd Officer on the 4 to 8 watch had seen the training record for the other 2nd Officer yesterday evening and he also wanted to know about these exciting things.
- Can you please show me these things as well? He asked when I came on the bridge yesterday evening at 8 o'clock to relieve him.
Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk- No problem
- Top priority , he said
- OK, tomorrow morning. We will have Pump Man and the Cadet as well.

So here we are again and today there were the 3 of them in class. And we started with the gas detector and we tested the detector and then we calibrated the darn thing before we continued with the personal gas detector.

Test, air calibration and gas calibration and when we were ready it was time for the testYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sttubes. And they were very good students and our Pump Man surprised me. HeAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskwas taking notes like they didYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.staboard M/T Ek-Star. That's the spirit I'm looking for!

And when I pointed this out the other 2 was suddenlyYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stbusy taking notes as well. But Pump Man was first! we were using H2S tubes today and I took the first sample from the bag.

Yes, I had showed them how to draw sample gas from the bottom of the tank with the gas detector. When I was ready we could read the result and it was almost the same as it was in the sample bottle, 25ppm H2S. And yes, our gas detector measures H2SYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stand our Cadet asked why we needed to use the test tube. Well, in class is the right place for asking questions.

- How fun would it be to use a tube for Benzene?
Would show foock all with the gas we're using and they would not have seen the reaction in the tube.Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stWhen I was ready with my tube I told them that it was their turn and they started to fight with each others.
- IT IS MY TURN!!
- NO I WANT TO DO IT!!
- I WILL KICK YOUR ARSE!!
- COME HER YOU LITTLE....
- ENOUGH ALREADY!! WE HAVE ENOUGH TUBES FOR EVERYONE!!!

Yeah, that's right, cool down. Not that I don't appreciate the spirit, but...

The tube is full of chemicals reacting with the toxic gas we're testing for. The reaction can be read on a scale on the tube.
And now it is easy to understand that we need different tubes with different filling depending on what toxic we're sampling for.

I still have a picture of the tube we used aboard M/T Ternvik
Here it is easy to see that we had 200ppm of whatever toxic we were testing for

I gave them one tube each and our Cadet started and when we were ready and I was alone on theYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stbridge I went back to enjoy my tea.

We don't know for how long we will stay anchored and our tank inspection is overdue. So we might clean the tanks here so we can inspect the tanks. So I started to do a tank cleaning plan.
Cleaning will be pretty quick, but the re-inerting will take quite some time.

Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk

Well, we have seen them before, we have had it up the here with them.   They have been driving us crazy, but here we go again, the DAILY   PICTURES! And this time of our 2nd Officer. He came rushing up to the   bridge 5 minutes before 12.
  - Now they have my 11 years old nephew to translate your web page
  - What??
  - My 11 years old nephew is the one who speaks English and he translating   your web page for the rest of my family.

And it was like a miracle, after lunch they were going down the pump room and we needed to do a enclosed space entry permit. And I used the aspirator bulb with the personal gas detector.Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard MaerskMy favourite way of measuring gas. I know exactly when I have pulled enough sample gas to the detector. And the guys wereat least to say thrilled to see the real thing in action.

I was in my cabin updating all this crap after dinner and then i had about one hour to study my Thai languag books before I went to the bridge for more tea again.

It had been a pretty exciting day and even though I don't expect any excitements on the bridge during the night I'm looking forward to enjoy my evening on the bridge. Tea and plenty to study before our vetting inspection. I started to rearrange the binders in my office this afternoon so I get it to Aladdin standard,Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sthopefully before the vetting inspection so I know everything I have in my binders.

I got an e-mail from my friend in Bangkok. Our friend won his fight at Lumpinee Stadium again, and as the owner of Sophia Muay Thai Gym said:

and they called from the company around 9 o'clock, no cargo so we will do tank cleaning and we will inspect theAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskcargo tanks. So I started the preparation for tank cleaning and we started 15 minutes before 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

Of course, after some delays, but I got a tour to the engine room out of it when I looked for our 2nd Engineer. And I ran in to our previous Deck Cadet, he is in the Engine room for 3 weeks now and we have the other Cadet on deck.

3 tanks and I will inspect them to see how they look before I continue with the other tanks. And we need to transfer slop water from CT 3 to CT 7. We cleaned and inspected CT 7 today and now we can put the rest of the wash water in these tanks. We stopped cleaning at 16:55 and we had the fans up and running quarter past 5. I had time for a Diet MAX with Pump Man before we went for dinner.

CT 7 P/S was gas free quarter to 7 and I went down to inspect the tanks, 7S first and as soon as we were back up we moved the fan to CT 6Stb. And our Pump Man and I were out of CT 7 Port at 8 o'clock. And as I expected yet another hour before CT 6 Stb would be gas free I went to my cabin to enjoy a freshly purchased Diet MAX with Pump Man.

Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk
And I had been a wee bit worried about the “daily picture” ever since we got the news about the tank cleaning. Will there be time to get the picture? And yes, I was in to pick up 6 cases of Diet MAX after dinner, and who is coming around the corner? Our 2nd Officer, and I gave him 3 cases to carry.

Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk
You see, all the vitamins from yesterday and you have plenty energy to carry my Diet MAX

I had made the tank entry permit for 6 Stb 5 minutes before 9 o'clock and I was soon in the tank. The tank looked good and I was soon back in my office while our AB secured all tank openings so I could start the IG plant. No look forward to the same adventures tomorrow.

I wasn't really feeling like open my Thai books when I was back in my cabin. But I had time for a few videos with Alif Silpachai and “Learn Thai with Mod” before going to bed.

Wednesday 5 th of June 2013
and I woke up just before my alarm went off. I was dead tired, in bed at midnight thirty and 30 minutes later I had cramp in both legs
- MOTHERFOOCKER!!!

Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stI was more angry than annoyed over the pain. So not much sleep and I went for a glass of Diet MAX at my desk while I turned on what is maybe the funkiest music in the world. In to the shower and down the mess room for some tea and 2 slices of black bread with cheese. When I'm backAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskhome I will start my day by learning Thai with the videos from Alif Silpachai and a few lessons with “Learn Thai with Mod”

But while aboard Alif Silpachai and “Learn Thai with Mod” will have to wait until the evening, if I have the time that is.

We started the day by transfer tank cleaning water and then we transfer the slop from the residual tank and it took me more
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthan 1 hour to transfer 50m³ of slop, it was like tar and it took quite some time to pump the slop. But we were ready just in time for the coffee break and I went through the start upAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskprocedure with the heating with our 2nd Engineer during the coffee break.

- Hmm, so actually, the coffee break turned in to aYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stmeeting and no coffee break. Well, did not come as a total surprise.

But we had time for our Lloyd Trainee when he showed us a new spot on his boiler suit.
- That's n utella , I said.
Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk
We started tank cleaning after the coffee break and we completed the cleaning at 14:25. We were in such a good mood when we were about to complete theDiet MAXcleaning and our Cadet went to get us a few Diet MAX
- This calls for a Diet MAX !
- Yeah, a real Diet MAX moment

We went down CT 1 P/S after the coffee break in the afternoon. And I decided to go down to Ct 3 P/S as well, still some time before it is time for dinner. I was late for dinner, but it was nice to have inspected the tanks. 7 tanks to go tomorrow, something I look forward to.

Before going for the shower I asked our Pump Man to get me a drum of the hand cleaning stuff. I needed a drum in my shower because I was all black. And our Mess Man brought me a sponge and I was almost clean when I came for dinner. And I kept the drum with hand cleaning stuff in my shower. Will most likely come in handy tomorrow when we have finished the tank inspection.

I was late for dinner and I had just started to shove down my food when our 2nd Officer came from his watch at 6 o'clock.

Sometimes, on rare occasions our 2nd officer find the time to sit down relax in the mess room

Back in my cabin and it was almost 7 o’clock, we had received an inquiry from the company about out draft after loading 30,000 MT. And I was tired after a full day of kicking behinds on deck. Watch a video with Ted Nugent? Stranglehold is always very good, but if I fall asleep without have done my Thai lesson videos with Alif Silpachai and the “Learn Thai with Mod” videos I would suffer from some severe agony. So you can watch a video of Ted Nugent performing the excellent Stranglehold while I learn Thai with Mod and Alif Silpachai.

On July 4th 2008 Ted Nugent celebrated Independence Day as only he could with a concert

Ted Nugent is unique, a truly larger than life character and a wonderful guitarist.

And I can't help being impressed, every time I'm watching these videos I notice that Ted Nugent have aging with grace, 1976 and 2008, 30 years. Of course, in 2008 he is not jumping around like he did back in 1976. But look at the guy!

and we started the day with work permit, tool box talk and a risk assessment in my office. The Engineers and Motor man were going to repair the cargo pump in CT 3 Port. They had made a hot work permit so they could take pictures while repairing the pump and of course, I took the opportunity to take some pictures during the day. Time for some “ACTION” pictures. When they had started with the pump our Pump Man and I started to prepare for the inspections of the last tanks. And I had to re-measure the tank atmosphere in CT 3 every hour while the work wasAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskgoing on. And we were soon realising that they would not be ready until 5 o'clock, the time the work permit expires.

So I did a new work permit during lunchAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskand this work permit is valid until 8 o'clock tonight. And by then they shouldYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sthopefully be ready. Or we will have to make a newYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwork permit, no end to the paper work aboard Richard Maersk.

As usual, Chief Officer's tea break and lunch break turns in to a quick bite of food before getting back to his office, noYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sttime to sit around picking buggers.

But it is fun since we got our new Chief Engineer aboard, he joined us last week and things starts to work. Actually I have not seen so much action since I was in Maersk Cassandra. Yeah, Joe, you know what I'm talking about. OK, sorry, I forgot our new 2nd Engineer aboard Britta Maersk, he joined us in Indonesia and after that thing started to work.

And it is fun to work with people like this, you can see the improvements and that is good for your spirit. Not very fun when you see things deteriorate by the day.

But of course, it is not easy to get things done, Christmas and New Year, and when finally your about to start to kick arse in January some foocker throws in a Russian Christmas and New Year on top of all the festivities and suddenly you’re in the middle of January. And it is Christmas or bust, never mind what's in need of repair.

11 O'clock and who do I see plunging down the deck with swung in his steps? It is our 2nd Officer and he was on the way to the cargo tank. I could see his enthusiasm bubbling in his blood from hundreds of meters away.

He was going down to check the tank, I don't think he had ever been in a cargo tank and he wanted to check it out. THAT'S THE SPIRIT!

Our Pump Man and I continued to inspect cargo tanks after lunch. We will inspect 7 tanks today and then we have finished all of our cargo tanks. Then we can sit down relax until it is time to sign off. Well, dream on, always something to do on a tanker. But anyway, it will be nice when we have completed the tank inspection and I will spend my day doing paper work tomorrow.

Of course, I will be busy measuring for gas in CT 3 Stb as they will repair that cargo pump tomorrow. But I willYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sthopefully never have to see the inside of a cargo tank aboard

But for sure, they will be a standard item in my “Helicopter packing” from now on.

And I know I have give up alcohol. But you never know when the nextaccident is going to happen, like when I ended up at the biker party in Bangkok and my (new) healthy life capsized and sunk in the Ratchadamnoen area.

So better off being prepared and I have already planned to haveone of the darn hand grip exercisers STAND-BY next to my bed. The Hangover DVD experience will never be the same again doing a few thousand squeezes on the hand grip exerciser.

And if I end up in bad company with plenty party I will soon look like Popeye doing all the handPopeyeexercises with the small wonder exerciser. And I'm not joking!

- WHAT?
- We can go eat. But I need a CARTE BLANC from any claim on 1000US$, in writing!
- ANY THING!

Well, a full day on deck and I was soon back in my cabin, time to update aladdin.st with the latest crap and then time toYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stLearn Thai with Mod and Alif Silpachai.

Or I might go down to pester our Cadets and the Lloyd Trainee instead and if I'm not too tired I can watch a video or to Learn Thai with Mod. Sounds like an exciting night!

Friday 7 th of June 2013
and I was dead tired when my alarm went off, but I was happy that I had finished the Thai alphabet CD and the Learn Thai with Mod and Alif Silpachai videos. And IAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskfinished my Thai books as well.

We started the day by doing a risk assessment and a work permit in my office and around 8 forty five the guys went down to start the work with the cargo pump. When the work started our Pump Man and I went back to my office to make a entry permit for the Pump room.

The cargo pump was ready at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and we secured the tanks after the test run and I had the IG up and running just before 5 o'clock. Will I be in time for dinner today?

We will measure the oxygen content tomorrow morning and then we will see how it looks. We will purge the Residual tank during the night and we will force ventilate tomorrow morning and the tank will be ready for inspection in a jiff.

I was on the bridge in the evening giving some instructions on the inerting of our cargo tanks. Our 2nd Officer was quick to understand the plan and I canYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sthopefully sleep good during the night.Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

I was down from the bridge and in to Captain's office, busy 24 foocking 7. But as I said, it is fun. We will load VGO and a fresh water rinse is necessary. No salt allowed in the cargo and weAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskhave just finished a tank cleaning with sea water.

We only have 140 tons of drinking water and we need to have our showers, and tea water is a must. We will start tomorrow morning and we will use our fire pump to fresh water rinse our cargo tanks.

It have been much about hazelnuts today. It started with the cadet going on about my Schweizernöt first thing in the morning. He felt peckish on some CRUNCHY Schweizernöt.
- If you want hazzelnut you can feel my arse, has turned in to a hazelnut since I started with the Thai boxing.

I rammed my arse up in his face
Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk- HERE! FEEL THIS! IS THIS HAZZELNUT ENOUGH FOR YOU? YEAH, GO AHEAD AND FEEL THE HAZZELNUT!!

Our Lloyd Trainee looked chocked and I thought that he was going to fall offhis chair choking on his breakfast. I'm pretty sure that this was a behaviour he was not used to around the breakfast table. He wondered where the f**k Lloyds had sent him to obtain his training.

- You don't believe me, but when I came to my first Maersk ship I had 2, 8 meters between the back pockets! I said
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- What theYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stWhat is it with this Chief Officer and his foocking back pockets?

And at the dinner Captain read on the n utella jar and he was surprised that there were more sugar than hazelnuts in the spread.
- I have a hazelnut for you, I said.

Hazelnuts, yes, our 2nd Officer was busy making a “HAZELNUT SURPRISE” when I came in to the mess room. Cheese and n utella ON THE SAME SANDWICH!!! Some people just don't care how much it cost.

I was up dating my web page and at 9 I went down to see if our Cadets and Lloyd trainee had found a good movie. Well, anyway, can't be worse than what they are usually watching. Hell, they are not even watching the movies them self busy playing with their phones and stuff. But today the TV room was empty so I continued to the CCR to see how things were going with the IG.

When I returned from the CCR I heard some commotion from the mess room area. I heard on eof the Cadets and I went to investigate. There were busy in the kitchen making snacks. They wereYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stmaking some MexicanYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stfood, I don't know what it is called.
But according to them it was the best thing ever. And they really tried to convinceSchweizernötthat it was the “BEST THING EVER”
- Smell that!
- Look at that! This will be the best snack ever
- Mmmmm, melted cheese and tomatoes
They opened the door to the oven several times with a big MMMMMYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stand drool coming from their mouths.
- OK, you eat that shit and I have a Schweizernöt
- You are jealous, you can have some food if you like
- I would not have eating that even if I had spent 15 years on Alcatraz!
- A come on! Bring some Schweizernöt to the TV room and enjoy some Mexican snacks! We can have some Schweizernöt to top it up with!

I give them 10 out of 10 for imagination, turned out that the Mexican snack was Pringles with cheese and tomatoes. And the dipped in to the tray first thing. Pringles with cheese and tomatoes, well, maybe they are on to something here.

The video was crappy, but the hot Pringles turned out to be a success

The movie was at least to say, well, bad and I was soon leaving for my cabin. Captain saved me, he came to the TV room and we went to update the stowage plan for the company and when I was back in the TV room the Pringles were gone and the guys had lost the interest for the movie.

I spent a few minutes finishing my Diet MAX before I went back to my cabin to Learn Thai with Mod and Alif Silpachai with my down loaded videos.
And I was happy that I hadn't wasted a Schweizernöt on the movie the guys were watching.

Saturday 8 th of June 2013
and today it is time for our Bonus tank cleaning. Well, we were ready before lunch, it was just a fresh water rinse of our tanks and it was soon done. Blowing lines after lunch with Pump Man and our Cadet. Well, they were on deck and I was in the CCR with the music on full blast while sipping on a Diet MAX and giving directions to the guys on deck via radio.

And I was lucky to be inside, it was blowing cold from the North, and it has been going on for a week now. Very strange, it usually blows for day during the summer and then it is over. Now it is like autumn with non-stop cold and strong wind.

Saturday dinner, something I'm looking forward to for the whole week. Disappointment, toast, same as last week and I had to use some chocolate syrup because I had been stupid enough to add n utella to my 1000$ list. I wasn't interesting in the cold leftovers from lunch that re-appeared for dinner so toast it was, and of course, tea.

I asked our Lloyd Trainee what he thought would be his strongest memory from Richard Maersk. He looked at the food and said:
- The food

Our 2nd Officer came for dinner and he told me that his nephew had started to ask questionsAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskabout my propeller cap.
- Now he also wants one, and I will have to go look for one. Where theYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stcan a buy a stupid thing like a cap with a propeller?

I had a few slices of toast with chocolate syrup, and I had to try the strawberry syrup as well, not much more exciting than the chocolate syrup. And believe me, there is a reason for n utella to be a wee bit more expensive.

I had turned off the IG before I went to dinner and I left to turn off the scrubber pump after 30 minutes. I was soon back in the mess room but then someone had removed the tea. I had a little left in my Aladdin cup that I had got from my friend in Rotterdam so I finished this while having a chat with the guys.

Well, this isn't an appropriate behaviour when we have children visiting www.aladdin.st

I was disappointed with our Deck Cadet, he had told us that he would make apple pie for dessert. I had given him several pointers in the TV room yesterday.
• No apples, blue berries or rhubarb.
I know apples are very healthy, but I can't say tasty. I force myself to eat 2 per day for all the healthy
stuff the apples contain. It is Ok, but throw an apple in the oven and it turns in to something rubber
like. And this rubber like thing is nothing you want to destroy the rest of the goodies with.
SO USE BLUE BERRIES OR RHUBARB

• Mix sugar and almond powder, 50/50 to make marzipan, mix with crushed Digestive and
crushed almonds and hazelnuts for the piecrust
Self-explanatory, haven’t we had enough of dry “crumble pies” by now? Crushed dry French bread
topped with apples thrown in the oven for a while. And topped with a few drops of custard.
THE PIE CRUST IS VERY IMPORTANT

And seriously, just to imagine my pie crust makes your mouth water...

• Butter, sugar, cinnamon, crushed hazel nuts on the top the get a toffee like crust.
Self-explanatory, haven’t we had enough of dry “crumble pies” by now? Let the sugar and butter
melt on top of the pie together with the cinnamon and you will have a delicious toffee/ caramel like
   pie crust.YUMMY!
THE PIE CRUST IS VERY IMPORTANT
And seriously, if you find butter, sugar and cinnamon too expensive. DON'T BOTHER TO DO THE PIE!

• Whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Take one pot (2 liter for 2 - 4 servings) of ice cream and
melt it in the micro while whipping the cream. Don't you dare use spray can cream!
Vanilla sauce, vanilla custard or custard, many names. And to understand how important this item is
we will have to ask ourselves one question.
Can I eat apple pie (I call it apple pie even though I don't use apples) without the vanilla custard?

The answer is NO!!! But you can eat the vanilla custard without the apple pie. So the vanilla custard
is obvioulsy the most important thing. If your apple pie (without apples) turns in to shit you can
always eat the vanilla custard! And as it can be hard to find the right ingredients for the vanilla
custard you can always melt vanilla ice cream in the micro.
THE VANILLA CUSTARD IS VERY IMPORTANT
To make your melted vanilla ice cream more exciting mix it with whipped cream. And whipped cream
on a spray can was a fantastic thing back in the 60's. But today it is just sad!

So yes, it was never mind the toast because I was expecting apple pie. But he had not made any apple pie. He told me he would do it for the evening.
- What theYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st
Then I cannot eat, my bet only allows me for Saturday meals, and Saturday evening apple pie is not allowed, disappointed again.
TEAM “Mexican Pringles” were soon up and running with the apple pie making.

G
that the content on www.aladdin.st doesn't go unnoticed.Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard MaerskThere was an e-mailfor me from UK

Well, I'm better offnot telling about the e-mail to our Cadet, he will go on and on about these foocking Pringles.

We started the IG plant in the morning and I brought our Cadet back to the bridge to explain some of the secrets about inerting tanks.

I had made a pressure test certificate and as I had signed the certificate at the wrong place I threw it away. Then I realised that I was going to make a “inert” drawing for our Cadet so I took out the paper from the waste bin again. I was most likely saving a tree or two.

Of course, I had crumple up the paper as we can see on the picture, but it was good enough and our Cadet got the picture on how to inert the cargo tanks. Now we hope he remembers this when he becomes a ChiefAladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard MaerskOfficer in the future.

We finished class and our Cadet disappeared out on deck to check the oxygen content in the residual tank. I could finally enjoy my morning tea and it was almost 10 o'clock.

Going along side tomorrow evening and then it was changed to late tonight. I spent the afternoon in my office doing loading plans and I was ready around 4 o'clock and we checked the oxygen content in the cargo tanks.

All OK in the cargo tanks and we stopped the IG generator and I went back to my cabin to enjoy a Diet MAX

I had forgotten my entertainment center on the bridge. A must in my office and as I had planned to do the loading plans I went to get my entertainment center on the bridge. Our 2nd officer had the time of his life when I came bursting in through the door.

Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk
Of course, he can do 6 by 6 for months

We were discussing desserts during dinner and I suggested Semlor as next project for the Cadets.Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard MaerskAnd of course, it would be for the next Saturday so I'm allowed to eat.

We discussed several different options of which the Semlor was the most interesting.

And no one knew what a Semla was and that made it even more interesting. Well, one of our Cadets suggested cheese cake and he was sent to the penalty box for 3 minutes for stupid suggestion. The other cadet Semla asked why I didn't eat the apple pie yesterday.

Well, I'm only allowed to eat during the Saturday meals and I don't want to pay several thousand dollars for some apple pie. He promised that have the dessert ready for the dinner next Saturday.

Well, are we going alongside tonight or not? Will I try to sleep or not? If I manage to sleep I will be awake all night and then we will for sure not go alongside. And I will have destroyed the whole day tomorrow.

They called me 10 minutes before midnight, time for arrival to Argos Terminal in Rotterdam
