Monday 1stof October 2018and the month of October stars as September came to an end, at Djibouti anchorage waiting. And it looks like we will stay here until November. Well, I´m in no hurry anywhere. I don´t mind signing off here end November.
+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 2thof October 2018and another full day here on the anchorage. Usual routines at 6 o´clock in the morning. Gymnastic and tool box meeting before the guys are sent for work.
+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 3rdof October 2018and another day anchored waiting for m/t Red Sea. It is darn hot, but we have excellent weather so the boys are busy painting on deck. Well, the deck team is in ballast tank 5 STB chipping and painting.
Evening on Djibouti anchorage
+++++++++++++++
Thursday 4thof October 2018and I enjoy the sunrise while waiting for the crew to come for the good morning gymnastics and tool box meeting. Drinking tea enjoying myself and time is passing pretty quickly and it is soon 6 o´clock and the boys are coming to the bridge.
Sun is rising over Djibouti anchorage
They will continue the chipping down the 5 STB ballast tank and we expect this tank to be ready on Saturday. Takes time and it is very hot down the ballast tank. But we only have two bad tanks and the rest should be quite quick to chip.
+++++++++++++++
Friday 5thof October 2018and they completed the chipping in 5 STB today so it will be painting tomorrow. Good work and they can start in ballast tank 5 Port on Sunday.
+++++++++++++++
Saturday 6thof October 2018and we have a container ship approaching Djibouti pilot station in the middle of our morning gymnastics and I took a picture. We have a lot of different gulls around us and I have brought my camera to the bridge.
Of course, not a gull in sight since I brought my camera, and I had expected plenty pictures of flying gulls. But we will stay here for long so I expect another chance, or many more chances.
Sun is rising over Djibouti anchorage and a ship is arriving
Battery is running low in the camera, but I have managed to buy a new on line and the Chief Engineer will bring it for me when he join the ship next week. Then I don´t have to think about mybattery and I can shoot away without having to think about the battery.
At 8 o´clock we measured the gas in the ballast tank and the crew could go down to start the painting and it will be ready today.
No gulls since I brought my camera to the bridge. But in the afternoon I spotted something on the bridge wing, turned out to be a Spotted Flycatcher. The bird was not scared so I managed to get some pictures of the bird. And thanks to BirdForum I managed to identify the bird
Thanks to MJB, Nutcracker and sicklebill at Birdforum I could identify this bird.
Sunday 7thof October 2018and we have a beautiful morning. m/t Red Sea 1 i anchored behind us waiting for ships so she can deliver bunker. When she have delivered enough she will come to us to get more bunker.
Sun is coming up over Djibouti anchorage
m/t Red Sea 1 at Djibouti anchorage
I have my camera on the bridge and there is a Falcon or something landing on our mast on tank deck. Too far away for any good pictures, but as there is nothing else I take a picture.
Afternoon and I think it is a Falcon
Captain coming to the bridge to show me a video. His friends are sending him a video, and it is obviously from a Maersk ship. And they are fighting, a video like this going viral is not doing any good for Maersk´s reputation. It is a little embarrassing just to look at it.
+++++++++++++++
Monday 8thof October 2018and today there is a Kingfisher in the mast, but as the sun is shining against me I cannot see any colours so I cannot identify the bird. But I can see that it is a Kingfisher. Well, a little bit of bird watching from the bridge to kill the time.
Kingfisher in the mast
m/t Red Sea 1 should have come tonight, but she is delayed until tomorrow night.
Evening at the anchorage
+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 9thof October 2018and I spend the morning looking for gulls. The White-eyed gulls flying outside the bridge, but it is very hard to catch them.
Wednesday 10thof October 2018and our new crew will arrive late afternoon with the tug boat. We will also got some provisions. But most important, I will get: 1) New charger for my camera 2) New vape 3) New Bluetooth speaker
The boys come to the bridge at 6 for tool box and good morning gymnastics. But we had to break the gymnastics. I had put oatmeal on the bridge wings yesterday trying to attract birds, but nothing. Now there was a

Coming on the afternoon watch and still no sign of the on signers, but we got news that m/t Red Sea will arrive at 10 o´clock tonight.
The tug is leaving with the off signers
The tug boat left with the off signers and m/t Red Sea 1 is calling me on the radio. They will arrive at 19 thirty. So it will be a long night. We start discharging at 22:36 and I´m in bed just after midnight expecting an early morning call when we´re ready tomorrow.
+++++++++++++++
Thursday 11thof October 2018and they call me at 6 thirty, m/t Red Star 1 had given one hour notice and we complete 30 minutes later. Paper work and m/t Red Star 1 leave us around 11 o´clock. Now it will be two weeks or so before she returns for more fuel oil.
Captain is happy with his new shirt
I had got my new stuff yesterday and Captain had got a new white shirt. I had been looking for a shirt while I was in Djibouti, but I had come up with nothing. But now he have a new shirt and I got a few pictures.
I had an old friend visiting me on the bridge during my afternoon watch and now I managed to get a few pictures of the bird. And after consulting www.birdforum.net I found out that it was a Yellow Wagtail. But there are several kinds of them so I really don´t know.
Identified as a Western Yellow Wagtail thanks to www.birdforum.net
Friday 12thof October 2018and the crew will continue chipping and painting in 5 Port ballast tank. But we start the day by going to the fo´c´s´le to have a look at the valves to the mooring winches. And I make a video of the White-eyed Gulls sitting on the rails shitting when we walk forward passing the White-eyed Gulls.

Saturday 13thof October 2018and coming on the bridge early morning and I enjoy my tea. The day light is breaking and I see a bird on deck. Black stripe and it look like a Shrike. But as it is getting lighter I discover that it is a Bee-eater. A White-throated Bee-eater and this is yet another bird I have never seen before. I have two “bird baths” on the bridge wings, but so far it have been as success full as the oatmeal, not one single bird.
Well, I had the crow coming to have a look at the oatmeal the other day.
White-throated Bee-eater on deck
I was on the bridge taking a picture of the bird sitting on the cargo manifold so I could identify it. Could not believe my luck, of course far away. The bird took off and came up to sit next to me on the bridge and I could get a picture. Yet another bird I have never seen before

Sunday 14thof October 2018and I was on the bridge taking pictures of the White-eyed gulls, Lesser Black-backed Gull and a Tern. The Tern either a Lesser Crested Tern or aGreater Crested Tern. I cannot see the difference between them.
We have a long discussion on www.birdforum.net about the Tern. Is it a Lesser or a Greater Crested Tern?
I´m busy with the sea birds and I discover a little bird just next to me. Not afraid at all but I never get any pictures. Well, one when the bird turn my back on me.
Nut I am very lucky with the Ortolan Bunting. The bird, I think it is a female is coming back to me on the bridge in the afternoon and I can get pictures of the bird and that is another new bird on my list of observed birds.

Tuesday 16thof October 2018and it is another day waiting here at Djibouti anchorage.
+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 17thof October 2018and we had rain today, heavy rain, the first rain since I arrived to Djibouti. So, no sunshine and I might be able to get a picture of the Tern so I can see the correct colour of the bill.

I never saw the Tern today, but I had the White-eyed Gulls flying pass the bridge at eye level so I tried to get some pictures of them flying by.

Thursday 18thof October 2018and we are still waiting. By now we have had plenty rain and all the salt is rinsed of the ship.
+++++++++++++++
Friday 19thof October 2018and it was gloom and grey for long as I could see. Perfect light condition if the Tern is coming within photo range. I don´t expect the bird, I see it almost every day but the bird is never coming close enough for any good pictures. I hope to get a picture so we can end the discussion on Birdforum, is it a Greater or Lesser Crested Tern?
We have along discussion on www.birdforum.net about the Tern. Is it a Lesser or a Greater Crested Tern?
I posted the pictures of the Tern on www.birdforum.net and I hope we can sort this out.
The Greater Crested Tern is a large tern with a long (5.4–6.5 cm) YELLOW BILL, black legs, and a glossy black crest that is noticeably shaggy at its rear. In winter, the upperparts plumage wears to a paler grey, and the crown of the head becomes white, merging at the rear into a peppered black crest and mask.
The Lesser Crested Tern has a black cap, black legs and a long sharp ORANGE BILL. In winter, the forehead becomes white.

Saturday 20thof October 2018and we are still anchored waiting for m/t Red Sea 1. She is bunkering some ships coming in to the anchorage but we don’t know for how many days more we have to wait for her.
But here is plenty birds flying around so I can practice taking pictures of birds in flight.

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 21stof October 2018and we are still anchored waiting for m/t Red Sea 1. In the afternoon she still had 2500 tons remaining on board and only two ships to bunker as per the schedule, so we don´t know when the next STS will be.

Monday 22ndof October 2018and it was early morning at the tool box meeting and our Pump Man discover a bird on deck. I went out on the bridge wing to try to get a picture. Still too dark and I had to use a crazy ISO speed and the pictures was straight to the garbage bin. I kept two for identification purpose and it looks to be a Black-eared wheatear.
Black-eared wheatear?
Pictures not good enough for th eBird to make it to my list of observed birds
Black-eared wheatear?
And, well, no news from Red Sea 1. But I did a cargo calculation for fuel oil from India to Maritius. So maybe I can stay a little longer and sign off on Maritius. Then it will be a very short holiday in Thailand as they want me on Rita in the middle of December.
+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 23rdof October 2018and I spotted some wagtails on deck during the day, but they never came to visit me on the bridge so no pictures.
m/t Red Sea 1 delivering bunker to a ship next to us
+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 24thof October 2018and the wagtails were on deck in the early morning and they came flying up to the bridge deck. But I never managed to get a pictures of them
+++++++++++++++
Thursday 25thof October 2018and as we expect m/t Red Sea 1 to come here at 8 o´clock I was sleeping until 6 o´clock as we expect it to be a long day. We started with the good morning gymnastics and tool box meeting on the bridge at 6 o´clock.
I sent the guys to deck and I had what I´m almost sure is the Lesser Crested Tern flying around the bridge today. And today they were making noise so I went to record them.
My recorder had some problem and by the time it was up and running the terns was quiet and on top of that I had missed the opportunity to get the good pictures while fiddling around with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder, DARN! AND DOUBLE DARN!
A new friend come to visit me on the bridge - White-eyed gull
White-eyed gull - On board m/t Ribe Maersk, Djibouti anchorage - 25 October 2018
m/t Red Sea 1 call me 20 minutes before 8 o´clock. Their anchor is up and they are approaching us. They are secured on our starboard side at 08:00 and we expect them to leave us late tonight.

Down in the CCR and I wait for the Surveyor to come on board from m/t Red Sea 1 so we can measure the tanks before we start discharging. We started discharging at 10 thirty and we expect to be ready around 9 o´clock tonight.
We will discharge about 5700 tons, less than expected and that will leave us with about 6500 tons on board and that might mean that we will have to do two more discharging before we´re empty so we can leave Djibouti.
Well, this also means that I might have signed off by the time we can leave Djibouti, let´s see. Then I will stay for a few days to look for birds again.
2nd Engineer in the CCR
3rd Officer busy in the CCR
We complete discharging at 20:00 and m/t Red Sea 1 is leaving us at 11 o´clock in the evening and I could go to my cabin for a night of sleep so we´re ready for a day of action tomorrow. Never time to relax on board m/t Red Sea 1.

Birds flying over the water feeding from the surface. A school of fish is passing while the gulls are feeding on the smaller fish.
The gulls are sitting on the water above the school with "too big" fishes for them to eat. Looked beautiful in the light from the floodlights but as it was too dark I could not take any pictures.
+++++++++++++++
Friday 26thof October 2018and yet another day waiting for m/t Red Sea 1 to return. She is anchored next to us and she is still fully loaded. According to the schedule the next ship to bunker will be on the 2nd of November 2018.
Moon is coming up over Djibouti anchorage
+++++++++++++++
Saturday 27thof October 2018and we had a beautiful day at Djibouti Anchorage and I had quite a few White-eyed Gulls flying by the bridge and I was enjoying myself watching them.
It's a Pied Wheatear, not Cyprus Wheatear. Cyprus Wheatears don't get light like that in winter plumage, they stay very black and white with some peach colour on the breast in winter ... and females are practically identical, just a darker cap. Also Cyprus wheatears sit upright and proud, pied wheatear is hunched over and similar posture to hooded wheatear.
Nice shots though, I can tell you the dragonfly is a Vagrant Emperor, an interesting migratory species. I was actually out today trying to find larvae of this species in Cyprus as it isn't a confirmed successful breeding species out here with evidence.
Yes hope to see you soon too, will have to stock up on the pepsi 😄
+++++++++++++++
Sunday 28thof October 2018and I had the Terns flying around fishing hundred meters or so away and they were making noise and I gave it a try with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder.
I have never managed to get any good pictures and today I saw a group of them diving for fish. Far away so the record is a bit low. The streaming sound you can hear at about 33 seconds in to the recording is not a stream, it is a school of fish making the noise about 20 meters below me.
Anyone here that can be able to tell me if it is a Lesser or Greater Crested Tern from the recording?
Monday 29thof October 2018and yet another new week starts here on Djibouti anchorage. We will start to remove mud from the ballast tanks so we have a team of ABs in the tank with fire hoses flushing the bottom to remove the mud. Coming on the bridge in the evening and m/t Red Sea are still alongside the vessel she came alongside earlier this morning. More than 12 hour so I guess there is a dispute about the delivered quantity of bunker.
+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 30thof October 2018and we started the removal of mud from a new ballast tank today. The Superintendent came on board in the late afternoon and we will go down two ballast tanks tomorrow to check them out so they know what they look like before the dry dock.
+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 31stof October 2018and I went down to inspect two ballast tanks with our Superintendent in the morning. We entered the first tank around 8 thirty and we completed the last tank at, well, around 10 thirty.
Well, the ond of October is here and we´re expecting much more of the excitements in November as we had in October. ClickHEREto check it out.
