Sunday 1 ^st of October 2023 and we have all fast at midnight 36 and we spend the whole night in the CCR. I went to bed just after 7 but I was soon called for again. They could not start the cargo pumps for circulating the foot sample.

I was back in bed at 8 with my alarm set to go off just before lunch time. I got out of my room just in time to give our Cadet some last seconds advice before he went ashore. And if I am lucky, he might bring back a few bottles MAX for me.

I was very disappointed when they returned from shore. I had been delirious with anticipation since they left as I had not had had any MAX since I joined Nord Supreme. And they come back with ZIP, ZERO, NADA.

- Hmm, maybe I am better off to drink tea only.

Complete loading at 7 thirty and pilot was booked for 22 thirty and we have about 48 hours to Veracruz in Mexico where we will have a vetting inspection. We have one Superintendent on board that joined us at Vopak and he will stay on board until Mexico.

Monday 2 ^nd of October 2023 and we have left Galveston behind when I come on the bridge at 6 o'clock in the morning. Day light is breaking slowly and I can report 7 Brown Boobies hunting in front of the ship.

I see a lot of Brown Boobies so I do not understand why it generates a Rare Bird Alert.

We have a big group of Brown Boobies in front of the boat when I come on the bridge at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. And I spot one Masked Booby in the group. So, I do my best to get pictures for ID as I want to add the pictures to the Rare Bird Alert.

We have 7 Brown Boobies and they are soon disappearing, leaving one behind with the Masked Booby. I spot 4 white birds flying low over the water in front of the boat. Too far away for any ID but I was pretty sure it was egrets.

I am lucky and they egrets turn around and flying back towards us and they are starting to gain altitude and they come close and I can ID the birds as Cattle Egrets.

eBird Rare Bird Alert

I manage to get pictures good enough for ID that I can add to my eBird report and I was happy. I was very happy with the Masked Booby picture and the egrets and the Brown Booby was just good enough for ID purpose.

We continue towards south and it is a gorgeous evening. We expect to arrive to Veracruz tomorrow night, late evening. So, I will go down to inspect 3 Stb water ballast tank with our Superintendent tomorrow morning. Never time to relax for even a couple of seconds.

Tuesday 3 ^rd of October 2023 and the afternoon turned in to a real birding adventure. At 4 o'clock I had 7 sitting forward and suddenly they all took off at the same time to hunt for fish. 7 Brown Boobies hunting in front of the ship, suddenly turns in to 12 Brown Boobies.

I guess they have been sitting on the anchors as they seem to like it there.

I suspect that the Masked Booby is the same bird I have reported in my two previous reports.

Later on, I had 3 Cattle Egrets flying over the ship and I had a chance to ID them with my binoculars before they took off. A little later I had one Cattle Egret landing on deck. But I don't know if it was a fourth egret or one in the group that came back to spend the night.

We had a bird sitting in the deck crane and it looked like a falcon. Too far for any pictures with my Scooby Doo camera but I gave it a try. I used the Topaz program to double the size of the picture, with a poor result.

I posted the pictures on www.birdforum.net and it was suggested that it was a Merlin. I had looked in my book and it looked more like a Merlin than the Peregrine Falcon, I thought it was but the Peregrine do have the white around the chin and neck.

My notes from my observation:

Just after 6 o'clock I had 13 Swallows/ Martins flying around the bridge and I had no hopes to ID them. But I was lucky and they landed to spend the night in our stores crane on bridge deck.

I was very surprised to discover that I could come as close as one meter to get pictures. So, I had a picture to help me ID the bird and I found out that it was a Cliff Swallow

So, it had been a good birding afternoon in the Bay of Campeche in Gulf of Mexico.

Wednesday 4 ^th of October 2023 and we had expected Pilot in the afternoon, late afternoon. But we will get the Pilot at 12 o'clock and the Vetting Inspector will board u in the afternoon.

I spot a Green Heron on our gangway from the CCR when I prepare for arrival. I get out to have a look and the bird take off and land on the reducers at port side manifold.

Vetting Inspector come on board when formalities was completed with the authorities. I am busy with the Surveyors so I don't have time to meet the inspector. But he will pay me a visit in the CCR tomorrow morning at 6 o'clock.

It is almost 8 o'clock in the evening before we start discharging the first parcel, 125.000 Bbl. MTBE. When the MTBE is completed, we will discharge the ULSD.

Friday 6 ^th of October 2023 and we left Veracruz just after 2 o'clock in the morning. We have had a busy port stay with a vetting inspection with 2 remarks. So, it turned out to be OK.

I see one Great Blue Heron sitting on the deck crane from my window just before I should go to the bridge. Coming up and I was just about to take the picture when the bird took off. I discovered a falcon sitting on the gangway next to the crane.

And now I had studied my new “Birds of The West Indies” book, that I got last time in Houston so much after having seen the Merlin on the way to Veracruz. The Merlin and Peregrine Falcon are next to each other in the book.

So, this time it was easy to ID the bird and I was looking at the bird taking of landing on the fo'c's'le. And when the Peregrine Falcon landed, I spotted two more Peregrine Falcon sitting in top of the mast forward.

Just after 5 o'clock and I spotted 11 Great Blue Herons coming from NW flying towards SE. And at 6 I had 6 Great Blue Herons coming in from behind landing on deck in front of the accommodation. They were struggling in the hard wind.

Saturday 7 ^th of October 2023 and we had advanced ship's time by an hour during the night. So, it started to turn in to day light around 7 thirty and I spotted the first Brown Booby for the day 10 minutes before 8 o'clock.

advanced ships time by an hour during the night so I had a power nap when I came down to my room. Waking up and I had a look out the window, 2 Peregrine Falcons hunting over the boat. It might have been three but I was not sure.

But I could confirm it a minute later when I saw all three of them at the same time. And a couple of minutes later I could count to five Peregrine Falcons hunting over the deck through my window.

We will discharge next cargo, gasoline in Ecuador. But we do not have any load port so we will stop and drift at the deviation point for Houston/ Corpus Christi. We reached the deviation point at 17:00 and we stopped the engine.

We had very strong winds, force 6/7 and 8/9 in the gusts. I never saw the Brown Boobies arriving so they are sitting on our anchors. I had our friends, the three Peregrine Falcons starting to hunt over deck after we had stopped.

They are hunting in vain, they will never catch anything on our deck and I really wish they could leave to find food ashore. And I do not know if I can feed them with raw meet.

One of them looked to be attacking one of the Brown Boobies up front. I have never been so close to any Peregrine Falcons before and I was really crying that I did not have my bird camera. Strong winds and they tried to land on the bridge wing.

I managed to get a couple of pictures with my pocket camera, not so bad but I would love to have some proper pictures.

Monday 9 ^th of October 2023 and our Bosun find the Peregrine Falcon dead on deck in the morning. Bad news indeed. I need to get a water and food station up and running so the birds can get some energy. But how to feed falcons?

I have nothing but Danish Butter cookies to offer. So, I crushed some of them and I threw it on deck together with a water container. Lid from a Danish Butter cookie jar and the top of an empty Nutella jar and a stainless-steel nut to give some weight to it.

I spotted one Lark Sparrow and one Ruby Crowned Kinglet in the afternoon, but they were less than enthusiastic over my cookies.

Tuesday 10 ^th of October 2023 and I had one hummingbird landing outside the bridge and I got a few pictures and a sound recording that I will send to birdforum and they will hopefully be able to assist with the ID.

I had a hummingbird landing outside my window and I went out to have a look. The bird looked exhausted and I took it in my hand and I brought it inside.

I mixed sugar and water in a Nutella lid to see if it wanted to eat. But the bird looked like it wanted to get out flying to the window. So, I brought my breakfast outside and it was not interested. I tried to get it to eat but no interest.

The bird took of flying towards Texas, 250 km away and I really hope the bird reach the safety ashore.

The bird, I checked my Birds of the West Indies and if it is a female most of them look the same. But I discovered something looking like orange in the plumage and I was thinking moulting male.

Then I can only find one bird that fits my pictures if I imagine the bird in breeding plumage, the Bee Hummingbird. It was a very small hummingbird. Any thoughts about my ID?

The sound recording, we hear sound and wing flaps when the bird is inside leaving my sugar water. I take out the sugar water and when I get back in to get the bird it makes some sounds, heard after the silence in the recording.

Thanks to members at Birdforum I could identify this bird as a Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

Coming down from the bridge and it is time to test our manifold manometers. Excellent opportunity for our Cadet to learn a thing or two. He has never done this job before so he was eager to get started with the test.

Our Bosun assisted and they tested all our manifolds and I could close the job as this was overdue with a few days, so we need to get it done.

My new friend the Lark Sparrow come to check out the Danosh Butter cookies

Coming on the bridge at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and I was soon spotting the Lark Sparrow and the bird approached my crushed Danish Butter cookies and the water. The bird did not eat anything and I was pondering a new idea.

I came up with an idea, I will move the water and I will add a bird bath. The Danish Butter cookies will be changed to steamed rice and I hope our Cadet will go ashore in Houston so we can get bird seeds.

I cleaned up the biscuits and I went over to port side bridge wing to do the same, but I stopped as I could see the Lark Sparrow feeding on the cookies. I had refilled the water before so this might have attracted the Lark Sparrow to come back.

I cleaned up the cookies when the bird had disappeared and I prepared a food and water station with water and steamed rice for the birds to (Hopefully) enjoy.

Wednesday 11 ^th of October 2023 and we drop anchor at Galveston anchorage at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. It was a terrible morning with strong winds and rain.

We have no berthing prospects but I hope we can stay here for a couple of days as we have much to do on deck and not so much time.

Since April 2023 eBird offer a new feature, to create Trip Reports. At least this is when I first heard of this feature and I have decided to make the eBird Trip Reports instead of my list of OBSERVED birds.

Friday 13 ^th of October 2023 and we have all fast at Kinder Morgan Terminal in Galena Park, Houston 06:24. We got provision at the Galveston Fairway Anchorage yesterday evening before taking the pilot at midnight.

We had ordered 10 boxes of MAX and it was confirmed but they delivered normal Pepsi. What a disappointment! I had really been looking forward to some refreshments.

Saturday 14 ^th of October 2023 and I was told that there was a dead duck on monkey island at lunch. I went to investigate with our Cadet after lunch. Turned out to be a dead Blue-winged Teal.

We saw 3 different herons/ egrets at the jetty and I started a new eBird Trip Report, Galena Park, Houston to Ecuador and today's checklist will be the first in this trip report.

Our Cargo Representative went ashore and I had given a shopping list for him. Flax seeds and bird seed and he brought back the stuff when he returned in the late evening. A big bag of bird seeds so I am looking forward to feed the birds landing on the ship on our way to Ecuador.

Our Messman had went ashore after dinner and I had giving money to him for refreshments so I hope to be able to enjoy some refreshments tomorrow morning when we complete the fourth parcel.

Sunday 15 ^th of October 2023 and they call me at 3 o'clock in the morning. Coming down to the CCR 10 minutes later and instant disappointment, no refreshments. But I was told that he had found the refreshments and I will bring them at 6 when he starts to work.

So, I could enjoy my refreshments a couple of minutes after 6 o'clock in the morning.

Tuesday 17 ^th of October 2023 and we had left the pilot one and a half hour before I came on my watch at 4 o'clock in the morning. We were steaming towards SE and it was a beautiful morning.

I saw a bird flying into the window and knocked itself out. I went to have a look and I found the bird “BELLY UP” and I was very happy to see that the bird could stand up and I managed to get a picture through the window before it took off.

I was looking in my new book, “Birds of the West Indies” under warblers. But the only bird I can see fitting m bird is the Northern or Lousiana Watertrush. But it did not feel 100% good.

I posted the picture on birdforum and a short while later I had the ID thanks to birdmeister and Butty on birdforum. And I was very happy for that.

Coming on the bridge in the afternoon and Iwas joined by a Brown Booby 10 minutes before 5 o'clock. The bird was with me for a couple of minutes before it took off. I spotted on dove at the bird seeds at one of my food/ water stations.

A little bit after 5 o'clock and I was joined by two Masked Boobies and I got a couple of pictures for my eBird checklist. Good, Both the brown and masked booby were a Rare Bird Alert.

Thursday 19 ^th of October 2023 and I pass the Yucanta Channel between Cuba and Mexico in the morning. I spot two Brown Boobies, the first one arrived at 07:15 and the second Brown Boobie arrived a few minutes after that.

They were hunting together in front of the boat. Coming up to the bridge in the afternoon and we are just south of the Yucata Channel and I spot one Peregrine Falcon sitting in the mast forward. 30 minutes later and I had another raptor flying around the ship.

I am 99.9% sure it was a second Peregrine Falcon, I never got a really good look so I reported the bird as a “small falcon sp.” in eBird.

I had two birds coming in from behind landing on deck and they took cover under the cat walk. From behind it looked like water hens. I sent the AB to the catwalk to see if we could flush the birds and one of them came out.

It was getting dark, but it might have been Green Herons. I hope to see them tomorrow morning so I can get a proper ID.

Friday 20 ^th of October 2023 and we discovered one Osprey sitting on the starboard side bridge wing. It was just getting enough light to see the bird and I tried with a couple of photos. Too dark, but we can see that it is an Osprey.

The bird takes off before we have proper light but I was happy to have seen the bird.

There was one Peregrine Falcon as well and I spotted the bird again at 11 o'clock on the bridge wing so I went to get some chicken to see if it wanted to eat. But it did not look like the chicken will be any success.

Steaming in a course 145° East of Honduras when I come on the bridge at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. I thought it was a Northern Gannet, for sure not a Masked Booby with the wing pattern. The bird just flied by me and I thought I could see red feet. And I got it on camera so I ID the bird as a Red Footed Booby.

This was the best thing happening today and I was very happy that I could see that it wasn't a Masked Booby just by looking at the wing pattern. So, I have learnt a lot from www.birdforum.net

2 Brown Boobies were gone just before 5 o'clock, but I was joined by a Masked Booby that disappeared after 5 minutes. But it was flying close to me so I got pictures before the bird disappeared.

Not any scientific study, just observations that I have done during the last two months on board m/t Nord Supreme.

Brown Booby, hunting in front of the boat. Coming back maybe 75 meters when chasing fish and then going back in front of the boat again. When they catch a fish, they stay behind to eat the fish and then they are coming in low from behind again to hunt.

Masked Booby, like the gulls. Flying along the boat. Our speed is about 25km/h and they are gliding faster than our speed. They reach the front and they make a circle and start gain from behind. Opportunity to get pictures as they come within a couple of meters when they fly by me at eye level.

Red-footed Booby, they are a mix of Brown and Masked Booby. Maybe there are regional differences as I have seen Red-footed Boobies hunting in front of the boat as well, but they are flying back at time like the Masked Booby but they stay low over the water

Saturday 21 ^st of October 2023 and we are steaming south when I come on the bridge at 4 o'clock in the morning. I can see our friend the Red-footed Booby at 05:45 when it starts to get a little day light.

20 past 6 and the Red-footed Booby start to hunt together with the Brown Boobies and the Red-footed Booby disappears after a few minutes. There are 5 Brown Boobies hunting in front of the boat when I leave the bridge at 8 o'clock.

I go down our ballast tank #4 Port to inspect the tank and after that there is a cubicton of paper work to be done.

Inspection report and a ballast report as I discharged some ballast to correct the list.

And I had to do some other work reports before I could go to have a shower and Iwas soaking wet coming back from the ballast tank inspection as we were running in to heavy rain.

Coming out of the shower 10 minutes before 12 and I spotted a white booby from my window. I had no binocular so I could not see if it was a Masked or Red-footed. I went to have a look on deck before I went for lunch.

I had seen two Peregrine Falcons from my window, one in the deck crane and one in the forward mast. The falcon sitting in the crane took off when I approached and it flew to the forward mast.

The bird in the forward mast took off and now I could see that it had been two falcons looking like one. And 3 Peregrin Falcons generated a Rare Bird Alert in eBird.

3 Brown Boobies sitting on the rail and 2 on each anchor and I could report 7 Brown Boobies. I spotted one warbler and two swallows that I could not ID as well.

The falcons, could not care less about the chicken I put on the bridge wing for them to eat. But I found a bird leg under the mast so they have killed a bird to eat. But there is not much meat on one of these small birds.

Sunday 22 ^nd of October 2023 and we were anchored when I came down to my office at 6 o'clock in the morning. We will change our load line here at the anchorage so we will get started as soon as I have had my tea.

We will cover the old load line and paint a new below the old load line. Thus, the ship can load less cargo and the DWT will be less. Tonnage is smaller but the dimensions of the ship is still the same and we can enter ports accepting only smaller ships.

Captain had found a dead bird on the bridge wing and he sent me a picture. Seem like the whole crew are looking out for birds on the ship now.

Monday 23 ^rd of October 2023 and we started to heave up the anchor at 5 o'clock in the morning and we will get the pilot at 6 thirty just inside the breakwaters. We were out of the Gatun Locks around 10 o'clock and I had been running my eBird app.

Gatun locks is an eBird hotspot and I had been able to report a few birds on my way from the anchorage to Lake Gatun. I got an hour of sleep before lunch and I was called for at 13 thirty. We are taking on the mooring crew for the locks on the Pacific side.

We are out of the Panama Canal around 6 o'clock in the evening and we drop the anchor 20 minutes after 7 o'clock. We will have Surveyors coming to take sample of the cargoes and we will wait for orders before proceeding to the discharge port.

Sunday 29 ^th of October 2023 and almost one week at the anchorage, and no news about the discharging in Ecuador. I have made checklists in eBird every day and I have noticed a Peregrine Falcon coming to the boat to sit in the forward mast every day.

The falcon arrives in the very late afternoon and I see the bird flying out over deck to catch something before returning back to the mast.

Around 7 o'clock in the evening and I have Brown Pelicans, usually 2 of them, coming to hunt around the boat in the light from the flood lights on our deck.

The month of October 2023 comes to an end, still no news about the discharging in Ecuador. A week att he anchorage and I have done all my required online training. I have had a good chance to study the bird life on the anchorage.

Every night at 7 and I have had between one and six Brown Pelicans coming to hunt in the light from our flood light around the boat. Same with the frigatebirds, coming over deck in the dark.

One Peregrine Falcon landing in the forward mast late afternoon every day. And why is the bird coming out on the boat, should stay ashore. But maybe because of our deck light?
