Day 26: Kanha

After breakfast, go for jungle safari at Kisli zone, to explore flora & fauna of with expert naturalist. Later return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Saturday 30 th of January 2016 and I had been awake for long when they knocked at my door at 05:45. I had some terrible pain in my wound during the night, most likely scratching the wound over the bed sheets. I was in the dining hall 5 minutes past 6 and we had a quick cuppa and 3 biscuits. The camp fire was burning and my driver warmed himself while I was drinking my tea.

Today they wrapped me in 3 blankets before we took off. Today 9°C and yesterday it was 12°C so it is still summer time compared to Bandhavgarh. It took us a few minutes to drive to the gate to register and to pick up our Guide.

There were quite a number of jeeps in the queue when we arrived to the gate. The clock turned 7 thirty and they opened the gate. Below is a selection of pictures from today's morning safari.

We had been driving for about 15 minutes when the driver told me there was a tiger.
- Keep your camera stand-by!
There was a tiger sitting next to the road and I brought out my camera. It was a beauty and she crossed the dust track just ahead of us. It was worth all the pain getting up early to see this. What a beauty.

Why are the animals on the roads? Of course, where would you have walked, on the foot path or through the bushes next to the foot path? Yeah, I thought so! Well, same in Africa. But in Africa they had the Elephants walking through the jungle making “super highways” through the jungle for the other animals.

Wild animals and it is all about conserving the energy and we see footprints from Leopards, Tigers, Bears and Jackals etc. in the dust all the time. Anyway, it was a beautiful sight and I forgot all about the cold. And by now I have taken quite some pictures and I remember looking at the camera settings at the bottom of the viewer in the camera and I'm quite happy with the pictures.

Practice it's was needed, but of course, next time coming home from Maersk I have forgot it all and I need to learn where the buttons on my camera are located. And of course, learn what the buttons are used for all over again. But taking pictures is a good practice and it is getting better. But birds are still very hard

Among others I have used Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds as the birds in Thailand and India are, well, many of them are the same.

I have had most help from my friend, the bird pal I met at Suan Rot Fai. Sending pictures of birds I have not been able to identify to him via Line. 3 minutes later he and he have managed to identify most of the birds I have had problems with. THANKS! Visit his web page m☥lever for his beautiful pictures.

And my new aid, maybe, and I say maybe the best aid. I brought my mobile phone as my SIM card have stopped working and I tried to get it to work again so I can use the internet. Thus I had my phone in my pocket on my first game drive in Jim Corbett National Park.

We saw a bird and I asked my Guide and the driver if they had a pen and a paper as I had forgot my pen and paper in my room. I remembered my LG phone and I recorded the name. And thus I will always bring my phone. Writing the name in the car and I have found more than once that it can be hard to read what I had wrote when I'm back in my room.

So now I always have my mobile in my pocket and it has been a great help.

Of course, all bird pictures available on my Indian
bird checklist of bird I have seen by clicking HERE

Of course, I have seen many many more, but this list is for birds I managed to get on picture

Some of the pictures are OK, and some of them are straight up in a very poor quality

A beautiful beautiful morning safari had come to an end and we were soon back at Kanha Jungle Lodge. 100 o'clock and I was getting hungry and I was really looking forward to the cheese &Kanha Jungle Lodgeonion omelette with tea and toast. And I might have more than one of each.

And it is perfect temperature to sit outside in the sunshine listen to the birds to enjoy the delicious breakfast. Yes, it is like a good Swedish summer.

And while I enjoy my breakfast I can update myself with the latest news by reading the news on my mobile.

I borrowed a SIM card from Kanha Jungle Lodge, very slow internet but it is good to read the news on the mobile phone, sometimes that is.

I really like the breakfast, actually I like it so much I had 3 omelettes and this is not doing anyKanha Jungle Lodgegood for my V-shaped torso. I can't wait to get back to Bangkok and my tuna and fruit diet.

There is a nature trail in the forest outside the hotel and we should have walked there yesterday. But we decided to do it today instead. We will walk down to the Banjar River to see if we can see any birds.

My Driver/ Guide/ Naturalist that the tigers came here at night and they even have had a tiger coming in to the lodge. Exciting, maybe I should leave the door open to my room from now on. Nah, leaving the door open invites snakes and insects I really don't care about to have in my room.

Driver/ Guide

My Driver is also a Guide/ naturalist like in Africa. But as no surprise the Indian Government have a regulation to bring a Guide. Many of them don't speak English and it is the Driver/ Guide/ Naturalist that speaks English and know the animals.

Except in Ranthambhore, I asked the Guide about some birds and animals and he knew duck all. Driver/ Guide/ Naturalist know all the birds, animals and trees. Well, except again for Ranthambhore.

And I think the Driver/ Guide/ Naturalist at Kanha Jungle Lodge have been the best so far.

It was a nice walk even though it was hot. I spent the rest of the time until 14 thirty in my cabin and at 14 thirty we left for our afternoon safari in the Mutti Zone. Will we see any tigers or beautiful birds? Below are some of the pictures I took during the afternoon safari.

Yet another beautiful and exciting day have come to an end here in India. Today we have had plenty tiger action and I was excited. I spent the evening in my cabin. I told them that I didn't wanted any dinner, but they were bagging, so I went for dinner. Excellent, the chicken was very good and I had way too much.

They start counting the tigers tomorrow and we cannot start our morning game drive until 08 thirty. I asked them to knock on my door at 6 thirty with a pot of tea and fruit. I can sleep longer but then I will have a hard time to fall asleep in the evening.

And I need to be full of vim for the game drive tomorrow. Any more tigers, find out by clicking HERE Tigers and beautiful birds lurking around the corner.
