Thursday 16thof May 2019and I had my tea in the room at Hotel Skansen, Färjestaden. I will start the day by going to look for the Long-eared Owl. The light willhopefully be better coming in from the east.
I reach Stenåsabadet at 05:40 and I start my eBird app. I was soon to realize that I was a little bit too early as the sun did come in from the north. The sun in the east and the owl nest will be in a good light.
So I just had a quick look at the owl and on the way back to the car I spotted two fieldfares. So it was quite a good morning
Leaving Stenåsabadet and I had planned to come back in about two hours time when the sun had moved from north to east. If I´m lucky I will be able to get a few good pictures of the owl. Would have been nice this morning, but the owl was covered by branches when sitting in the nest.
I had been told about nesting waders along the way back to the main road and I drove slowly. And I was lucky to spot one Eurasian Curlew next to the road. So it had been a good morning at Stenåsabadet. And I will be back again in 2 hours or so.

So I will make a quick stop at Ottenby, Ölands Södra Udde to have a look, I might see the Rose Finch and then a quick stop at Beijershamn before going back to look at the Long-eared Owl. So I drove south keeping an eye out for birds along the way.
Entering the gate to the Ottenby area and there was a lot of birds along the road driving south towards the lighthouse on Ölands Södra Udde. There are thousands of Barnacle and Canada gooses, but keep an eye out as you never know what´s hiding along the road.
Parking the car and I walked to Naturum next to the lighthouse and no sign of any Rose Finch or Bluethroat today. There was a lot of people looking for birds at the lighthouse. Huge binoculars and they were all looking out at the sea. Maybe the rare cormorant again, or maybe something even more exciting.
But there was nothing for me. Not many birds today, but I was lucky when I walked to the car and I ran in to a Common Chiffchaff hunting an insect for breakfast.
It was just a quick visit to Ölands Södra Udde and I didn´t see much interesting, well, it was nice to see the Common Chiffchaff. This was my last visit to Ölands Södra Udde for this time. Of course, If I come back to Öland I will visit Ölands Södra Udde again.
No more time as I will drive to the north part to have a look at Trollskogen to see if I can get a glimpse of the Common Firecrest.

I will make a stop at Beijershamn before going to have another look at the Long-eared Owl. So driving north on road #136 and taking off the road towards Mörbylånga and then north towards Färjestaden for a little bit. Beijershamn have turned in to one of my favourites here on Öland.
Parking the car and I skipped the water front and went straight for the forest. I was soon running in to a wood warbler that proved to be hard to get on Picture. But I managed to get a recording.
I continued on the trail and I could not believe my luck, a Long-tailed Tit and I got both pictures and a recording of the bird, yet another productive visit to Beijershamn. The Long-tailed Tit was one of the birds that I really wanted to see.
Walking back towards the car and I get delayed by a Song Thrush. Sitting in the top of the tree singing and I had to stop to make a video, a beautiful song. I managed to get the video and I made a recording from the video that I uploaded on www.xeno-canto.org
Walking back to the cr and I looked for the Collared Flycatcher but I had no luck finding the bird.
Recorded with my Panasonic Video camera when I made the VIDEO
We can hear the Wood Warbler from recording XC484076 in the recording as well.
Back at the car and I left Beijershamn very happy. I decided to come back here early tomorrow morning to have a look again before leaving for new Bird watching adventures in Skåne.

I was very low on Pepsi MAX so I decided to drive to Mörbylånga to Buy MAX. And I needed to fill gas in the car. Of course, even in the small village of Mörbylånga you can find the Gypsy sitting outside the supermarket begging.
For sure, Sweden accepts all kind of people coming to destroy the country, and they have really managed to turn the country in to a banana republic. And people are complaining, but continue to vote for the same people to run the country.
We can see on the ears that it is very strong wind
Long-eared Owl
We can see on the ears that it is very strong wind
Parking the car and it was really not spring time any more. Strong winds and cold and of course, the Long-eared Owl was taking cover in the nest to avoid the wind. So I was a little disappointed with the owl pictures. I have one more chance tomorrow before leaving Öland.
The owner told me about two nestingCommon Kestrelpairs. I walked down to the beach and there is a group of trees. Believe me, it was not any pleasant experience at the water front with the cold wind coming in from the east.
There! I found one Kestrel nest! But when I had a closer look it was two Wood Pigeons taking cover from the wind in one of the trees.
Raptor turns out to be two Common Wood Pigeons
Walking back to the car and I spotted a few birds but no more pictures. I need to leave in order to make it to Naturum-Trollskogen at the north part of Öland. And I want to stop at Böda Harbour to look for the Ruff.

I left Stenåsabadet driving north on the east side of Öland passing Petgärde Swamp and theEurasian Penduline Tit. But I want to make a quick stop at Böda Harbour to look for the Ruff before going to Trollskogen. I really want to see the Common Firecrest so I will spend some time there to look for the bird.
Arriving to Böda Harbour and the wind was really strong. I spotted a few Eiders in the harbour and they took off towards the sea when they spotted me. They were kind of struggling with the head wind swimming towards the open sea.
There was also two Tufted Duck couples in the harbour and I tried to get a few pictures.
Driving to the open space next to the beach where I use to park as close as possible to the beach to spot waders using the car as a hide. I see one Northern Wheatear pottering around in the grass. I see one Common Ringed-plover looking for food on the beach.
One Northern Lapwing, maybe the same one I see every time I have been here. Sitting in the car with my camera sticking out of the window and I see one male Ruff. As someone said on birdforum.net:There are as many different Ruff plumages as there are Ruffs.
So I don´t know if it is in breeding plumage or if it is a moulting Ruff. Or even which kind of male Ruff it is. But if it is moulting I guess it is or have been a territorial male.

I was happy when I left Böda Harbour and as this have turned out to be one of my favourite places on Öland I will for sure be back if I come back to Öland.

Time passes real quickly here on Öland and I was getting in a hurry to get to Naturum Trollskogen to try to get a glimpse of the Common Firecrest. Driving north towards Trollskogen. Took me about 20 minutes to get there and I started my eBird app at 3 o´clock.

Today´s Track
I left for the trails after a quick stop at Naturum and the helpful staff had pointed out the latest Common Firecrest sightings for me on a map. I followed the coloured trail where they had have three sightings. A gorgeous area and it was really joyful to walk along the trail in the beautiful forest while listening to the sounds from the forest.
But no birds, I spotted one European Robin, no surprise and several Chaffinches, no surprise as these birds are everywhere. Otherwise nothing and no place to sit down. A little disappointing start of the Trollskogen birding adventure.
I spotted a dead tree on the ground, 20 meters or so in to the forest from the trail. I went in to sit down and I spotted one Spotted Flycatcher in the tree I had planned to sit on. They bird took off and I was alone.
After 10 minutes of sitting down and there was a Blue Tit landing in the tree in front of me. Blue Tit is very small, but the Common Firecrest is even smaller, think it is the smallest bird in Sweden. So when I small bird landed next to the Blue Tit I could see that it was smaller.
So it must be the Common Firecrest and yes, it was and I started to take pictures. I didn´t spotted the second Firecrest, or I didn´t realise that it was two birds until one of them started to chase the second one.
The birds took off and I was very happy. The Common Firecrest had been my target bird since I heard about the bird at Naturum Trollskogen on the Swedish Radio. And I had seen the bird, not one, but two of them. Plenty pictures, most, well, almost all of them to the garbage bin. But I was in a really good mood continuing on the trail back to Naturum.
I knew it was a Common Firecrest but I was in a hurry back to Naturum to show the pictures for the girls. And of course, have them to confirm the bird before start spreading the news about the Firecrest around the world.
Coming out to the sea front and I could see the lighthouse on Ölands Norra Udde. Not far away if you have a boat, but with a car it is some distance to drive.
I spotted a few other birds walking back to Naturum but no pictures. And a gloomy and grey day had turned in to a sunny afternoon with blue sky. And I had really enjoyed myself in Trollskogen.
Naturum was closed by the time I was back so I went to my car and I started to drive south.

Dinner at Hotel Skansen in Färjestaden
Back at Hotel Skansen in Färjestaden and I had my dinner. They have good food at the hotel, but I have my oatmeal in my room and this is what I should eat. But last night on Öland and I thought: What the heck? I have seen the Common Firecrest so a little something in the restaurant will only do me good.
Back in my room and I packed my bag before going to bed with the alarm set to go off at 3 thirty. I will visit Beijershamn and then I will go have a look at the Long-eared Owl before driving to Skåne. ClickHEREto find out if I see any birds on my last day on Öland.
