Saturday 25thof August 2018and we will go to Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary to look for birds today. My driver was waiting outside the hotel at 7 thirty and we left Hotel D Varee Diva Rimnaam behind. I had 2 bottles of water and 2 bottles Pepsi MAX
in the car from yesterday.
We drove through the city of Chanthaburi and we were soon on road # 317 towards Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary. It was a gloomy and grey morning and it looked like it could start to rain any second. But we were lucky, well, let's wait to call it luck until we're ready with the bird watching.

We pass many ELEPHANT CROSSING warnings
It took us about 1 hour to reach the Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary. No people around even though it is Saturday. Well, it is the rainy season so there are other things to do. The gate was not manned and we just drove by and we turned right and we stopped at the parking lot.
Rain in the air and not a bird around, not even any bird sounds. We continued the road and we drove all the way up to the end of the road on the mountain. There was restrooms and a walk path going to a waterfall.

We look at the stream, no signs of any birds. I told the driver to stay behind and I would walk down the mountain. As soon as he could not see me he would drive after me until he sighted me again. Then he would stop and continue when I was out of sight again.
Quite clever, I will never be far away from the car. The sky is black so it will start to pour down any second and I'm never more than one or two minutes away from cover in the car.
I started to walk and it was a terrible noise from the cicadas.
Terrible noise from the cicadas
Recorded with my ZOOM H5 Handy recorder
It was really not pleasant to walk down the mountain with the cicadas making their sound. Well, it was not like they disturbed any bird sounds because it was very quiet (from the birds) walking down the mountain.
I saw one bird during the walk, a bird came flying along the road up the mountain. The bird left the road when it approached me and flew through the vegetation and came back out on the road when it had passed me. Flying over the car following me so this is yet another evidence that the birds are scared seeing my legs, but they don't care about the cars.
I passed a tree and there was a bird, I could hear a bird in top of the tree, but I could not see the bird. Calling to another bird across the road. I made a recording and I can hear the birds even though the cicadas makes a terrible noise.
We manage to hear the birds through the sound from the cicadas

A approached an elephant dropping and I could not help myself, I just had to go check it out. Is it fresh? Is there elephants in the forest looking at me right now? It was kind of exciting, and of course, as I have my new video camera in my belt I made a video.
I continued down the mountain and I spotted a huge butterfly. Yellow and black, I know it was a butterfly, but the first time I saw this butterfly I thought it was a bird.

Back at the headquarter
Back at the headquarter and I walk around the area. Now I can hear a lot of birds. There is a big lawn and 2 ponds and some surrounding dwellings. I walk around looking for the birds but I come up with nothing. I hear birds high up in a tree and I make 2 recordings, but I don't know what kind of birds it is. Maybe the Hill Myna.
The birds was far away but I could see that it was the Common Hill Myna on the picture.
Recorded with my ZOOM H5 Handy recorder. High filter pass with Audacity
2 short recordings of the same birds put together to make it longer
PLEASE! The birds was high up in a tree and I took the picture for identifying purpose ONLY! So 3 steps over exposure just to see the colours of the bird against the light

Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary - August 2018
Bird watching in Chanthaburi
We left Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary and we were driving back towards Chanthaburi. We will be at the boat at 15 thirty and we expect to be back in Chanthaburi around 12 o'clock. So a quick lunch and some rest before we take off for the Brahminy kite. We drive south on road #317 towards Chanthaburi. We're approaching Chanthaburi and we pass the Chanthaburi Municipal Secure Landfill Refuse Disposal Station.
I saw a cloud of white birds flying over the area and I asked the driver to turn around. We found a place to do a U-turn and we were soon back at the gate to Chanthaburi Municipal Secure Landfill Refuse Disposal Station. But we were no allowed inside.
They suggested to try a little further down the road, at something I think is called Durian Lansdale. We tried this place but we could not enter with the car. I walked to the border to the Chanthaburi Municipal Secure Landfill Refuse Disposal Station. I spotted the Cattle Egrets but they were a little too far away.

We left and we stopped to eat Japanese food before my driver dropped me at Hotel D Varee Diva Rimnaam at 1 o'clock. He will be back at 3 o'clock to pick me up so we can do one of the Top Things to Do in Chanthaburi, Thailand: Red hawks at Bang Chan Fishing Village
I went to bed for a very quick power nap and I was back outside Hotel D Varee Diva Rimnaam at 3 o'clock and we left for the boat. We were soon out on the water and we were soon seeing the Brahminy kite. It is a beautiful bird.

Back at the hotel and I checked my pictures from today, and yes, many of them ended up in the garbage bin. I went to bed and my alarm was set to go off just after 4 o'clock in the morning. I will return to Bangkok tomorrow afternoon. But first, we will go to look for birds and we will try to return to the Chanthaburi Municipal Secure Landfill Refuse Disposal Station.
I had come up with a plan, to try to offer a little money under the table to see if they let me in to take some pictures of the Cattle Egret. ClickHEREto see if I manage to get
