New Year in Europe

Calendar Monday 1 st of January 2018 and we left Fujairah anchorage at 09:10. Arriving to Ruwais on the 3rd of January and laycan starts at 00:01 on the 4th of January.

Tuesday 2 nd of January 2018
and we're steaming towards Ruwais. I have my gas detectors to calibrate and I called our Deck Cadet, a perfect opportunity for him to learn how to do it.

Wednesday 3 rd of January 2018
and we dropped anchor at 12 o'clock. We expect to come alongside around midnight so we stopped work at 3 in the afternoon. We had completed all the pre arrival test and checks so no need to run around and do this is the middle of the night. One step ahead as we used to say in Sweden.

+++++++++++++++
Thursday 4 th of January 2018
and they called me at 6 thirty something. I Had a cup of tea and a “Oatmeal Surprise” before I went on the bridge. The anchor wa son the way up and the pilot boat was on the way. We had all fast just before 10 o'clock and we started to load at 11:48. Of course, expecting to be ready in the middle of the night.

Latest news yesterday was pilot at midnight so I went to bed and managed to sleep for two hours. Of course, no pilot and it was very hard to fall asleep again. Anyway, we will take this opportunity to test the opening pressure of our P/V valves. Need to do this when we are loading so we see at what pressure they open. So we had a quick PEP meeting in the CCR before our Pump Man and deck Cadet went on deck with our certified test manometer.

Well, there is no end of the opportunities for our Deck Cadet to learn and train. Before we started with the P/V valves he had the chance to help our Pump man with the UTIs.

We needed to change some of the clips to close the UTI and there was a chance to use tools as well, soon a full-fledged tanker man, our Deck Cadet. They finished the UTIs and they were working when we tested them so we could get on with the P/V valves.

We were ready with the P/V valves just in time for dinner. I was in the CCR looking for our Deck Cadet but the 2nd officer was all by lonesome. I found the Cadet in the mess room having his dinner, well, it had been a long day so a little sit down relax is well needed. I will go to bed as I'm expected to be called around 2 o'clock in the morning.

Well, it have been a long day with plenty to do so a quick dinner is OK

They called me at 10 o'clock in the evening. There were some problem with the ballast eductor and I was back in my bed just after 11 o'clock in the evening. Expecting to be called very soon and I never got any sleep. Well, maybe an hour, way too short.

+++++++++++++++
Friday 5 th of January 2018
and they called me at 2 o'clock again, 2000m3 remaining to load. A shower and a cup of tea and I was down in the CCR.

I booked my flight with Indi Go between Kolkata and Nagpur. Thai Airways from Bangkok to Kolkata and 5 nights at the Pipal Tree Hotel in Kolkata. Same hotel I stayed at the last time in Kolkata. Not in a very nice area, but the rooms was good and the restaurant was excellent. A quick look in my records and I find:

I went for dinner and they had some very good food. I started with butter naan and a pot of tea. Some Ukrainian stew on a bed of herb rice and fried potatoes.

Hassel nut and some chocolate thing for dessert, excellent.

And it is just a few minutes there is a huge shopping mall. Of course, I will find out if there is any birding areas close by. And of course, it was just a few minutes to the airport. And as I will bring 2 cases of Pepsi MAX, one for Sundarbans and one for the Tadoba National Park . So I can keep one case at the hotel while I'm at Sundarbans.

Booked Thai Airways International Flight TG 313 to Subhas Chandra Bose Airport, Kolkata, India. And IndiGo flight 6E 202 from Kolkata to Nagpur. And I made a mistake booking the return flight. I booked IndiGo flight 6E 135 from Nagpur to Kolkata. As we have a morning safari I need to change it to the flight leaving at 18:00.

Yes, my Tiger safaris in India mid March are set up. I have a itinerary for Nepal as well, but I will need to get the off signing date confirmed before I finalise the itinerary.

We recommend you flying straight to Chitwan National Park the day you arrive. Please note the roads to Chitwan are being expanded that’s why half of the route is quite not done yet which have been causing a lots of delays. Normal drive time from Kathmandu to Chitwan is 5-6 hours now it is more than 8 hours. Sometime there have been delays in 15 hours as well. So we suggest you fly directly to Chitwan on the day you arrived in Nepal. We will pick you from International Airport and transfer to Domestic Airport. The flight is about half an hour to Chitwan.

You can drive from Chitwan National Park to Bardiya/ Bardia National Park and we have arranged a car for you and from Bardiya you will be flying out to Kathmandu. Then you have mention you would like 4 days in Kathmandu. So I have arranged one full day Bhaktapur sightseeing and half day sighting in Kathmandu. As for the birding Tour in Kathmandu. I have arranged a day in Shivepuri National Park in Kathmandu. It is just an hour away from the Kathmandu and it is very good place a bird watcher.

Regarding Mountain flight, I have arranged a mountain flight for you however it will not land anywhere. It will be an enchanting 50 minute flight over the world's highest mountain range where you can enjoy close-up views of Mt. Everest and other Himalayan giants like Ama Dablam, Lhotse etc.

There is very special request from the owner of the Tiger Tops. He is very keen to have a dinner with you one night when you are here in Kathmandu. He is also very wildlife/bird Enthusiast and as I have mention him there is a client who is also very keen in wildlife. He asked me to pass the message to you. If it’s alright would you be free to have dinner with Mr. Edwards.

and we changed crew off Mina Saqr just after 8 o'clock. Boat was supposed to be here at 6 thirty but they had not seen our ship name on the AIS so the immigration had not stamped them out of the country. So the boat was 2 hours late.

When we had changed our crew we continued towards the Strait of Hormuz. The crew was busy rigging our razor wire on the deck. Entering pirate area on Tuesday so we need to have the razor wire up around the ship by then. Saturday and I'm allowed to eat, so I went to see how things went for our Cook the kitchen.

In the nick of ducking time. I had asked our excellent Cook, Mr. Raggmunk if it was possible to have sausages and spaghetti for lunch. He had sliced the sausages preparing to fry the sausages in sauce and what not. I told him that sausages was best boiled like a hot dog
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- No sauce!!!!???
- NO
- Only boiled???!!!! What about the spaghetti?
- Plain, a few drops of oil, only!
- No sauce!!??
- Exactly, AND NO CHILLI OR GARLICYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

He looked at me like I was crazy. But it was a very good lunch, spaghetti and sausages and I was full when I left the mess room for the CCR. We have changed more than 25% of the crew and we need to have some drills during the afternoon. The crew were going to work with the razor wire until 3 o'clock. Then we will continue with this tomorrow.

We will have a fire in the kitchen during the drill so we had 2 firefighting team ready to get in to fight the fire. We also went through the fixed CO2 firefighting system in the kitchen before we went for our life boat muster. And when we're ready the new crew will know what to do in an emergency. And they will have adjusted the fire man’s outfits to fit them.

and the work with the razor wire continues today. We also held a "Pirate Attack" drill. Yes, it is all a joke. We made a risk assessment a week ago. 0-25 points and it was save. 25-50 and it was a wee bit dangerous. 75-100 is very dangerous. You fill up Maersk's excel sheet.

Back in 2013 and we were bound for Egypt, there were hundreds of people getting shoot on the streets every day and we called the Company Security Officer for the latest up dates. We never got hold of him. The day after we got a message from India with some kind of security “instructions” and “updates”

I ship on anchor had reported robbers on board and they had got away with a bucket of paint. So we were instructed to put a lock on the paint shop.

Nothing about the riots and shooting on the streets. Impressive! So when they tell us that our safety is their greatest concern, well, no one believe them.

+++++++++++++++
Monday 8 th of January 2018
and we're steaming South towards the Gulf of Eden. We prepared the ship for pirate attacks. I put buckets with heavy objects at the manifold on port and starboard side. A little something to throw at the pirates if they try to board the ship.

We put two rear view mirrors on the bridge wings so now we can see the pirates when they attack us.Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stWell, they save a lot of money on the armed guards.

and the Indian Ocean had changed from a windmill pond and it was a little choppy. Good, now they pirates will stay home. It was a slow day, not much to do on deck while in the pirate areas so I spent most of the day updating our computer system inventory.

International Recommended Transit Corridor

The corridor is not marked or defined by visual navigational means, nor is it intended to be a dedicated TSS but, to make warship patrols more effective, vessels transiting the GOA are strongly recommended to adhere to the Transit Corridor and Group Transit guidelines.

IRTC (International Recommended Transit Corridor)
International Recommended Transit Corridor

We will be at the position to transit the IRTC (International Recommended Transit Corridor) at midnight on the 11th, that is 21:00 UTC. There will be a few other ships passing the corridor at the same time. But as the weather is now the risk for any attacks are slim.

EU NAVFOR Somalia, also known as Operation Atalanta

Wednesday 10 th of January 2018
and we're still steaming towards Gulf of Aden, expect to arrive around midnight. From there we have about 2 days in pirate waters until we arrive to Massawa. We have not arrived yet, but I still can't wait until we leave the place behind. As little work asWeldingpossible on deck, but our Pump Man is keeping himself busy repairing steam pipes on deck. Remove old cracked pipes and he weld new one in the work shop down in the engine room.

The steam line is in a very bad shape and we have new leaking pipes every day while we running the steam to heat the cargo. Lucky that we have a guy that can weld on board.

and we're in the Gulf of Aden. We joined the West bound 12 knots group in the IRTC (International Recommended Transit Corridor) at midnight. So when I came to the CCR 10 minutes before 8 I went to look if I could see any Navy ship escorting us. I only saw 3 other tanker. No sight of the EU NAVFOR Somalia ships.

Operation Atalanta

EU NAVFOR Somalia, also known as Operation Atalanta, is a current counter-piracy military operation at sea off the Horn of Africa and in the Western Indian Ocean, that is the firstEU NAVFOR Somalia, also known as Operation Atalantaundertaken by the European Union Naval Force. The operational headquarters is located at Northwood Headquarters in the UK.

The mission launched in December 2008 with a focus on protecting Somalia-bound vessels and shipments belonging to the WFP and AMISOM, as well as select other vulnerable shipments. In addition, Operation Atalanta monitors fishing activity on the regional seaboard. In 2012, the scope of the mission expanded to include Somali coastal territories and internal waters so as to co-ordinate counter-piracy operations with Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and regional administrations.

On 16 July 2012, the EU also mandated the EUCAP Nestor mission to build up the maritime capacity of regional navies.

It is part of a larger global action by the EU to prevent and combat acts of piracy in the Indian Ocean, and it the first EU naval operation to be launched. It cooperates with the multinational Combined Task Force 151 of the US-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and NATO's anti-piracy Operation Ocean Shield.

We got news from the Agent today. Seems like it will be berthing at the Tam Oil Jetty in Massawa at day break Saturday morning. Arriving at the anchorage midnight tomorrow, between Friday and Saturday. Daylight navigation only and I hope we can leave Sunday morning.

Eritrea

an independent state in NE Africa, on the Red Sea; pop. 3,500,000 (est. 1991); language, Tigre and Cushitic languages; capital, Asmara.

It was an Italian colony from 1890 to 1952, when it became part of Ethiopia. After a long guerrilla war it became internally self-governing in 1991 and fully independent in 1993.

Massawa

(also Mitsiwa) the chief port of Eritrea, on the Red Sea; pop. 27,500 (1984).

I checked the internet for information about Massawa, in Eritrea. I searched for “Tam Oil Jetty in Massawa” and, well, there wasn't much. But the Massawa Port Authorities have a web page. But I cannot say that I was any wiser after having study their web page.

Seriously, it would have been embarrassing to have a child coming up with something like that. This is our agent doing his best and I'm flabbergasted. The company say they take the rest hours seriously. Of course, there is no changes in the work load and they still talk about how to decrease the amount of rest hour violations.

Of course, they expect us to lie about the working hours. And when someone is violating the rest hours they, well,Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stsurprise, they blame it on the crew and call it bad planning.

You never hear anyone complaining about e-mails like the one above, what does it mean?

Our Cadet was busy heling me in the CCR, pre arrival tests and checks. So now we don't have to do this early tomorrow morning when we come along side, if we come alongside tomorrow that is.

and I was out of bed at 5. We expect the Pilot to be on board at 06:20. I enjoyed tea and oatmeal in my cabin. They called at 5 thirty to tell me that the pilot would be on board at 6 and, well, they were on board quarter to 8. We were finished with the mooring at 10, 2 anchors and 4 mooring ropes to buoys from the poop deck.

We started to remove the razor wires as soon as the pilot came on board and we were ready just in time. We started to discharge at 2 o'clock and we expect 3 days to complete discharging and I really hope we go back towards the Indian Ocean even though we have to pass through the pirate area again. My hope is that I will sign off in Singapore.

And no, we have not forgotten the Saturday Afternoon fun Video

and our Loading Master had asked if he could take our empty drums and I was happy to give them to him. We keep a discharge rate of 300m3 per hour so we expect to be ready Tuesday evening. Daylight navigation only so we cannot leave until Wednesday morning. But we don't have any destination, but I hope we go South and not North when we're leaving Massawa behind. I have no wishes for another “SUEZ” experience

and we're still discharging at TamOil Terminal in Massawa. Expect to be ready tomorrow evening and departing on Wednesday morning. And now they are working on a cargo from Jeddah to Malta. I have never been to Malta so if I go home from there I might stay for a few days to look for birds. But according to internet it is only 14° C

+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 16 th of January 2018
and they stopped discharging at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. No more space ashore so we will have to wait until they have ullage space in the shore tanks.

+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 17 th of January 2018
and the Loading Master came on board at 12 thirty. We will measure the last tanks and then we will leave. There is no more space in the shore tanks and we have about 2200m3 remaining on board. We disconnected the cargo hose and we got information that the pilot would board us early tomorrow morning.

Looks like we will drop the anchor and that they will send another tanker to take our cargo. We will have to see what happens.

+++++++++++++++
Thursday 18 th of January 2018
and we expected the Pilot to be on board at 7 in the morning. Well, at least to be on board around that time. But it was 12 before we left and we dropped anchor an hour later with no news about when to discharge the last 2200 tons of cargo. But we got an inquiry on how much we could load keeping this cargo on board.

So we might leave with the remaining cargo on board. Later on there was an e-mail that we would come back to the jetty tomorrow as they suddenly had room for the remaining fuel oil. And in the evening, it was finally decided that there would come a ship alongside us tomorrow to pick up the cargo they can't find space for at the power plant.

m/t Samos and she is anchored here as well. I guess this is not the first time they cannot discharge full cargo at the power plant and that she have been doing this before.

+++++++++++++++
Friday 19 th of January 2018
and I was on the bridge at 7. Still no movements from m/t Samos. But yesterday she didn't had any certificates for the cargo hose and fenders and I was doubtful if they were going to let her alongside without the proper paper work. We were waiting and they could not get hold of the owners to the ship. They need plenty paper work and information before they can approve m/t Samos for the STS operation.

There was some action while waiting for information. Our Cadet needed a plaster and we decided to make it an Instagram moment. So we brought the camera to the hospital.

In the afternoon they had decided not to approve m/t Samos for the STS operation. So we will see what happens. Now they will have to come up with another alternative. I'm just happy if they cancel the trip to the north. And Maersk makes money every day from the charterer. Someone is losing money to have the remaining 2200 tons of fuel oil on board.

+++++++++++++++
Saturday 20 th of January 2018
and suddenly, they wanted us to go do a STS operation with m/t Athina I. She is also on the anchorage and we could see a tug boat putting three small fenders on her side. Most likely the same “uncertified” fenders they had used on m/t Samos

Athina I is a big ship and she looks “modern” But she was not approved because it was 1 year ago she had her last vetting. They had to remove the fenders again and I could not help but wondering when they would learn. The Agent called in the middle of the lunch.
- You have to go to the big red ship!

From this we learnt that the Agent didn’t had a clue on how things were working. And none of them have any experience on working with a serious tanker company where things should be in good order. The companies around here seems to be working with a “LET GO” and “NEVER MIND” mentally. Only God knows for how long these tankers have been anchored here in Massawa.

No STS today and we have time for the Saturday Afternoon fun Video

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 21 st of January 2018
and we're still anchored. The crew took the opportunity to grease all the wires supporting our masts during the day. And there were no news about any discharging. I think it is strange, they should at least be able to estimate how many days it will take for them to get space in their shore tanks.

The Loading Master told me that there was a ship coming to discharge every second month. About 10000 ton per month, so approx. 300 tons per day. Well, good to have a few days waiting as we have not been able to do much work the last two weeks. Loading, passing pirate area and discharging. So we have enough to keep us busy.

and it was a busy day at Massawa anchorage. We inspected #3 void space and I was lucky with my background as a Commando. Not much space to move between the departments. I had to do it the “tunnel rat” or what ever they were called style.

Our #Cadet #Sonnefar and our #2ndOfficer pressure tested the immersion suits after lunch and I was there to get some pictures for Instagram. Well, the time passed quickly and it was soon time to go for a shower and a cup of tea.

Killing yet another evening in my cabin and as for now, it looks like we will come alongside tomorrow morning so we can get rid of our last cargo. By now we have been here too long.

Well, we will see how long we're going to stay here. We moved in towards the anchorage after lunch in order to take bunker.

But they told us to go back out again, different information all the time, and some times 2 different instructions at the same time.

and we moved to the anchorage outside Jeddah to take bunker. We also got news that we will come alongside tomorrow morning at 6 o'clock. At least we got our bunker and we had to cancell our safety meeting as the bunkering took much longer than anticipated.

Wednesday 31 st of January 2018
and our Pilot boarded us at 15 hundred. We were rejected because of high H2S in the tanks and we had to start purging the tanks to get from 400 ppm to 10 ppm. According to the pilot we need to be below 10ppm and this will take quite some time. So, my off signing is delayed as we can not come in and load and I will sign off in Cyprus. Loading 17000 MT VGO here to discharge to NS Consul at an STS operation off Cyprus.

We have reached the end of January 2018 and we swing right over to the month of February 2918 by clicking HERE
