Aladdin's adventure on board Thai Airways flight TG 319 to Tribhuvan International, Kathmandu

Sunday 25 th of March 2018 and the taxi is booked for 7 o'clock in the morning. I went down with my garbage at 06:40 and the car was already here waiting. I went back up to get my bag and we were soon on our way towards Suvarnabhumi International and Thai Airways flight TG 319 to Tribhuvan International, Kathmandu.

Early Sunday morning and there wasn't much traffic on the roads and we were hauling arse. The Driver had given me a pre warning about a construction work on the highway. But it was not so bad and we arrived around 7 thirty. The driver gave me 3 US Dollars, I have 36 dollars and I need 40 US Dollars for my tourist visa to Nepal. To be paid at the Tribhuvan International, Kathmandu.

So I went to the bank before I went to check-in. There is a couple of bank desks at entrance #1. I asked for 10 dollars and the girl asked for my passport. She held out her hand saying:
- ตังค์ (money)

I got furious, how did this girl get her job? Just putting out her hand “money” What theYet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st? You just hold out your hand saying “money”!!!! HOW MUCH!!!???

Checking in

Checking in and I got a window seat, first time ever I ask for a window seat and on the right hand side of the plane, so if I'm lucky I can get a glimpse of Mount Everest. It is 25 years ago since I was flying to Kathmandu last time. But I think we passed Mount Everest on our right hand side. Drinking Soda water enjoying some snacks in a cool Thai Airways lounge. The main lounge is still very hot, but I went to the lounges at the C gates.

Thai Airway have 2 lounges at the C-gates and I went to one of them and the AC was working. And no warning from the walk way so I was enjoying the early morning while waiting for my flight. And I made a mental note to come back here next time again. A pleasant lounge even though it is much smaller. But now I don’t want all of you to come running here using this lounge,

We boarded the plane and I had my own seat on the right hand side. I asked the Stewardess to confirm with the pilot that this was the right side to see Mount Everest and the Himalayas. She came back and confirmed that I was on the right spot. She asked what I wanted to drink and eat after take-off. I told her that I wanted the salmon and she could keep a flow of Earl Grey tea coming my way.

The brought the dinner and this is the second time I get red beetroot with salmon. Something, when I think about it seems impossible, but it have been good. And we had a very good dinner and more tea while I watched a movie. I opened the window blind 30 minutes or so before arrival and we had a majestic sight outside the window.

The Himalaya sticking up above the clouds. What a sight! Impressive is not enough to describe it. 25 years ago and I was trekking the Himalaya and it was a mighty sight up there. You could really understand why the people became religious seeing this. And in one way it was almost (if possible) even more majestic to see if from the airplane.

And I'm booked on the “Everest Experience” flight before going home. And I was about to add a few extra days to trek up to the Everest View Hotel. But this would require one week extra here in Nepal, nothing I have time for. But who knows, I might come back to Nepal.

Congestions at Tribhuvan International Airport and we had to fly in circles for 30 minutes before we could land. So I could enjoy the Himalaya for another 30 minutes, a real bonus. I was sippin’ on my bottle of water and I think it is the first time I have not been eager to land. It was an enjoyable afternoon on the sky.

Good food, a movie, well, the movie was pure sh*t, something with a dead Superman, an at least to say far-fetched story. Well, I was soon growing kind of tired of the movie. We were soon starting to descent to Tribhuvan International, Kathmandu.

Landing and we had to take a bus to the arrival hall. I have landed in Kathmandu before, but I didn't remember the airport. Walking to the immigration and when I came to the immigration I recognised the place where we have to pay for our tourist visa. I had filled up my visa applicationOn lineon-line yesterday so I didn't had to fill up that paper. But I had to fill up an arrival card. This would of course have been better if they could have handed out on the flight.

But all in all, I didn't spend many minutes in the immigration. And my bag was among the firs to come on the luggage belt so I was in the custom just a few minutes after having come off the plan. Custom, this was another story.

Was like in India 30 years ago. All the returning people had their luggage carts full of TVs. When you were flying to India 30 years ago all the passengers had electronics to bring back home.

Passing the custom in India back then and they only asked for video cameras, the big thing back then. But here they just waved the tourist by and the Nepalese had their luggage scrutinised by the custom officers. Well, arrival to Tribhuvan International, Kathmandu had been quite smooth!

Leaving the airport bound for Hotel Yak & Yeti

Coming out from the airport and I found Tiger Tops representative with my name card and we were soon in the car on our way to Hotel Yak & Yeti. Well, Kathmandu had for sure changed a lot the last 25 years. But it was still very dusty on the roads. I came here 25 years ago because I was a little feed up with India, back then I remember thinking that Kathmandu was way ahead of India regarding restaurants, pubs entertainment etc.

And we passed quite a few pubs and “disco” noting you see in India even today. There were Pepsi signs all over the town. I didn't noticed one single Coca Cola sign so this looked promising. I willDiet Pepsihave a walk around town after checking in at the hotel. And the hotel looked very nice when we arrived. There was a big group checking in before me and I had a chat with the ladies from USA. They were back from the tiger safari.

There had not been any tiger sightings in Chitwan National park for two weeks. But they had seen tigers in Bardiya/ Bardia National Park so they were happy with the tour. Now they will stay a few days in Kathmandu before flying back home.

I interrogated the hotel staff about Pepsi and they confirmed both two and three times that they had Diet Pepsi at the hotel. Seems to be a good hotel.

I really loved my room, very nice and I had been in the room for just a few minutes when room service knocked on the door. I opened a Diet Pepsi and I relaxed for a bit before going to check out the town. There is a beautiful garden at the hotel but I didn't find any birds. There is a tree outside the entrance and there were several crows and Mynas. There were some other small birds as well, but I never saw them.

Several souvenir shops on the street outside the hotel and I kept my eyes out for a Ganesha, Nepali style. I miss a Ganesha from Nepal in my collection. Well, I didn't found anything I liked, but I will give it another try after the tiger safari.

Ganesha,

also spelled Ganesa and Ganesh, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka and Pillaiyar is one of the best-known and most widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image isGanesha (พระพิฆเนศ)found throughout India and Nepal. Hindu sects worship him regardless of affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains, Buddhists, and beyond India.

Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him particularlyGanesha (พระพิฆเนศ)easy to identify. Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles, Vighneshvara, patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom.

Ganesha is worshipped on many religious and secular occasions; especially at the beginning of ventures such as buying a vehicle or starting a business. K.N. Somayaji says, "there can hardly be a [Hindu] home [in India] which does not house an idol of Ganapati. Ganapati, being the most popular deity in India, is worshipped by almost all castes and in all parts of the country". Devotees believe that if Ganesha is propitiated, he grants success, prosperity and protection against adversity.
