Friday 13thof January 2017and I called the reception to send a car 5 minutes before 6. I wentout and they were waiting for me. There was another guy and it turned out that he was my Guide.
My Guide had come here with the car so no need to call the hotel car. We left to go have a look for the almost extinct Bali Myna. My Guide is working for the National Park and they have a breeding program for the Bali Myna.
They are breeding the Bali Myna not far away from the hotel and they are releasing maybe 10 to 20 birds per year. This will be our first stop. We got out of the car and it was maybe 15 minutes past 6 in the morning. Still too dark to get any good pictures.
But I could see a few Bali Mynas flying around. There was quite a few Bali Mynas flying around and in the middle they had an aviary where the breeding took place. They were still in the big cage and they will be released in to the jungle next month.
Bali Myna, it was a beautiful bird, white with blue patches around the eyes.
My Guide showing me three nests that had babies, previously releases Bali Mynas have made babies in the free so it looks good even though there isn't many of them remaining. But it seems to go slow and steady towards more Bali Mynas in the wild so this was good news. The day proceeded and as it got brighter it was easier to get pictures of the Bali Myna.

We left the breeding area and I was happy to have seen the beautiful Bali Myna in the free. And also nests with babies in the free. We were driving down the road for 5 to 10 minutes before we stopped. We got out of the car and we were soon in the jungle. Well, it was a mangrove as we were going through the mangrove to go look for Kingfishers.
We saw Collared Kingfishers and a new Kingfisher for me, the small Cerulean Kingfisher. But I never got any pictures. It is a small Kingfisher and as it was like an elephant coming through the jungle when I plunged down to the beach the bird was long gone by the time I was in position for a picture. I willhopefully get another chance
And it was itching on my like I had never experienced before. All the insects and that is even though I had soaked myself in mosquito repellent before I left my room.
On the way again

We walked back to the car and my Guide wanted us to get in to the forest on the other side of the road. When I saw this I really didn't feel like I wanted to go through another adventure walking through bushes infested with all kinds of things that want to chew on me.
But as soon as we had opened the green wall of bushes the forest was more open and it was quite easy to walk around. We found 2 Rufous-backed Kingfisher but as you can see on the pictures below. Impossible to get any pictures as the bird was sitting behind a lot of branches and bushes, and as soon as I tried to move through the bushes the bird was gone.
But I have seen 2 new Kingfishers today, the Rufous-backed Kingfisher and the Cerulean Kingfisher. But no pictures, but there willhopefully be more chances to get pictures.
A wall of bushes
I was very pleasantly surprised when we came in to the forest
We see a Rufous-backed Kingfisher
We see another Rufous-backed Kingfisher
Not easy to get a picture of the Rufous-backed Kingfisher behind all the branches
Back out again
We were out from the forest after having seen 2 Rufous-backed Kingfisher, or maybe it was the same. Anyway, we didn't see any other birds in the forest. We got in to the bus and we drove back to the Bali Myna breeding place and we walked around the area for a while. We had met another bird watcher from Indonesia and I had a chat with him while looking for Bali Mynas.
We drove back to my hotel and my Guide will be back at 3 o'clock in the afternoon for our afternoon tour. We decided to start 7 o'clock tomorrow morning as it was too dark at 6.
My Guide left me at the Bali Tower where I was going to have my breakfast before going back to my room. Tea (of course) and a basket of their excellent black bread that I had have with my salmon yesterday. I enjoyed my breakfast while looking at the jungle from the restaurant.
It is a very nice hotel, but dinner in the evening is not a pleasant experience. The food is excellent, but all the insects biting me makes it terrible. And that is even though I'm soaked in repellent. Well, breakfast was OK with no insects and I enjoyed an excellent breakfast before going back to my room with the hotel car.

My Guide was back 3 o'clock and we took off towards new birding adventures. We were going to another place and I was told that there would be some mangrove and some savanna as the Guidecalled it.
It was about 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel to the area. It was down at the waterfront, and the area my Guide called savanna was a huge pasture with cows.
We spotted a Kingfisher but the bird took off as soon as we stopped the car. I went to check out the mangrove and I walked around there for a while. The area was full of birds, but it was not easyto get any pictures.
We started to drive around in my Guide's car and now we could come very close to the birds.
Yes, yet again and I get proof for my theory. The birds get scared when they see you walk as they see your legs moving.
When I big car is coming they don't care. So we were ZIG ZAGGING between the cows walking around in the area and we came very close to the Blue-tailed bee-eater. They were sitting inbranches just a few meters away. And they didn't bother with the car.
I tried to go out a few times to get a “close up” and most of the times the Blue-tailed bee-eater flew away. So we had to try to positioning the car for optimal picture view from the open window. I started to have the door open while driving around.
I got quite a few pictures of the Blue-tailed bee-eater and we also saw the Common Sandpiper and again, we came very close to them with the car. Otherwisethe Sandpiper is very shy. But they liked the car and we came up pretty close.
We saw a lot of birds and as it was rain in the air it was dark so taking pictures of small sunbirds etc. We saw the Pink-necked Green-Pigeon but I never got any good pictures. Collared Kingfishers, White-vented Mynas and a lot of Yellow-vented Bulbuls, but no good pictures. I had a good time and time turned very quick and it was soon time to return back to my hotel. It took us about 30 minutes to drive back to the hotel and I was back around 18 thirty or something like that.
We had decided to start at 7 tomorrow, but when we were here we decided to take a boa tomorrow morning and we will start at 6 o'clock again. So it will be yet another morning to get out of bed at 5 o'clock. I had expected to be able to sleep until 6 but I was at least excited to get out on a boat to explore the mangroves.
Well, yet another day have come to an end. 2 new Kingfishers and plenty birds, but not many good pictures. But I have had a great day out in the wilderness. If you want to know what birds we will see tomorrow you just have to clickHERE.
